Boulder Sunday - Moss and MushroomssteemCreated with Sketch.

I found another mossy boulder while mushroom hunting for this #bouldersunday by @shasta

I found this nice boulder specimen while walking in a wooded area i've never been to. The ground was completely soft from earthworm casings. The whole area surrounding this boulder had rich dark soil with many exciting mushrooms growing around it. I'm beginning to think mossy boulders are a good signal to look for when mushroom hunting.

The whole boulder was green either with algae or moss. There were probably some lichens growing on it as well.

Here is some of the fluffy moss covering the boulder. This makes a good habitat for various insects and slugs.

Here's remnants of a snail that left its shell on the boulder.

Right near the edge of the moss colored boulder I found this strange alien looking fungi. The common name for these is black earth tongues. The latin name is Glutinoglossum glutinosum and there are a few different colors in this family of fungi as well. It's pretty easy to overlook these club shaped fungi as they blend into the black soil perfectly.

Once I knew they were around I started seeing them everywhere. As far as i know there is no medicinal properties and they are solid like wood so eating them is out of the question. Who knows maybe these can cure cancer if anyone ever gets around to studying them.

Behind the first boulder image a dead tree is on its side. These itty bitty little shrooms were growing out of it. I've seen these before but have yet to get a good identification on them.

These white mycenas were growing on the dead tree as well. They create little forests of their own. Mycena come in many different colors ranging from white, red, yellow and brown. Some are edible but they don't have a palatable taste.

There was also a baby pear shaped puffball mushroom growing on the dead log. The latin name is Lycoperdon pyriforme which roughly translates to wolf fart mushroom lol. This refers to them letting out clouds of spores.

This is what the pear shaped puffballs look like after they have spored out. You can actually eat these if you harvest them while they are all white inside. They taste really good almost like a mix between a potato and a mushroom with a smokey taste. That's it for this #bouldersunday it kind of veered off into a mushroom post but from now on I'm using mossy boulders to point me to the mushrooms.
