My brand new book on the Vikings and Viking Age, now available on Amazon

in #books7 years ago

Greetings and happy new year, fellow steem users! I would hereby like to introduce history fans and prospective readers to my brand new book on the Vikings and the Viking Age, available since December, 2016 on Amazon.

The Viking Realms: A Fascinating and Adventurous Introduction into the Viking Age is my first book ever published. It is the result of several years of thorough research on the tumultuous period of time in early medieval European history known as the Viking era, with consistent implications on everyday life back in the day, and in-depth analysis on how veridic is the perception rooted in the popular culture which most people have (rather erroneously, I would add) on the Vikings.

The content of the book stems also from various articles published in the passing of time on The Dockyards, a website related to medieval history of which I'm the founder and main author since early 2015. Throughout its 15 chapters, 'The Viking Realms: A Fascinating and Adventurous Introduction into the Viking Age' aims to introduce the reader into a journey back in time, covering quite essential subjects concerning the achievements of the Vikings with respect to exploration, navigation, trade, and architecture. There are also consistent excerpts regarding their mythology, society, cuisine or technology.

Documentation sources were carefully selected in order to match an objective, transparent, and accurate historical overview on who actually were the Norsemen, with more than 300 footnotes reinforcing the narrative of the manuscript.

Furthermore, possible answers in regard to their contemporary, rather misconceived nature, are equally given, while the origins of the vast majority of the misconceptions on their era are pertinently exposed as well.

The book is available on Amazon store under both Kindle and paperback format. The Kindle format is available at $11.89, whereas the paperback version costs $14.99.

Thus, I truly hope you will find the information and research I have gathered and precisely adapted, processed, and organised in the pages of my very first book useful to your interests. Be it the great passion for medieval history and studies, or mere curiosity for something (apparently) unknown, I sincerely wish you have a pleasant lecture!

P.S.: I'm very much looking forward to reading your impressions on it! :)

This is fabulous! I am of Norman descent so this would def be of interest. I'll check it out and thank you!!

Thank you! Great to hear this! As you might already know, present day Normandy was given by Charles III the Simple, King of Western Francia, to a Norwegian earl by the name Hrólfr (later known as Rollo) in the early part of the 10th century so as to defend that part of his kingdom against subsequent waves of Viking war bands. Thus, the Duchy of Normandy was created and Rollo became the first Count of Rouen.

Huzzah! My folks were the Daniels and Fitzgeralds who later showed up in Ulster and I'm currently in the process of connecting all of those lines. Might I ask what sparked your interest in the Vikings?

Interesting. Personally, I'm interested in the Middle Ages in general, and that also includes the Norsemen. I must mention though, my interest is mostly scientific.

Besides, I could also mention their seafaring culture, which also intrigued me for a while because I like the sea very much.

Another thing would be the Goths (that is, the 'original' ones; a Germanic people which most likely stemmed from the isle of Gotland, modern day Sweden), who are also related to the Norsemen.

They had an important historical legacy during the Migration period in much of Central and Eastern Europe (as well as parts of Western Europe).

Last but not least, I always wondered if all the misconceptions and myths regarding their age are, in fact, based on reality. It turned out that, as with the vast majority of the misconceptions, many of them were false. Then I did some further research and I came to the conclusion that they had a real history worth reading about.
