Rare Book of the Day – The Stories of John Cheever, John Cheever. First Edition.

in #books7 years ago

John Cheever (1912-1982) was an American short-story writer and novelist. He's sometimes referred to as the "Chekhov of the suburbs" for his ability to capture the drama and sadness of his characters by revealing the undercurrents of apparently insignificant events. His work explores, often through fantasy and ironic comedy, the life, manners, and morals of middle-class suburban America. This all might sound a little dry but, trust me, it's not. Cheever's a master of his craft.

The Stories of John Cheever was published in 1978 and is, you guessed it, a collection of short stories from throughout his career. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1979 and its first paperback edition won a 1981 National Book Award. Upon publication, the Boston Globe called it "Profound and daring...some of the most wonderful stories any American has written," with The New York Times declaring "Not merely the publishing event of the 'season' but a grand occasion in English literature." It's a winner, folks. This is the first edition, first printing:

I have read his short story "The Enormous Radio". It's really interesting story about a radio through which you can listen to what others are talking. John Cheever stories have some unique aspects.

Yes! That's a great one
