Rare Book of the Day – The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane. First Edition.

This one's a "classic" classic. The Red Badge of Courage is Crane's second, and most well-known, novel. It's a fairly brutal depiction of the American Civil War, and one soldier's journey to overcome his initial fears and to become a hero on the battle field. The title refers to the protagonist's longing for a wound, to counteract feelings of shame over his cowardice. Although Crane was born after the war and had not experienced battle first-hand, the novel is known for its realism. After publication, the novel garnered widespread acclaim, catapulting the then 24 year-old Crane to international fame. This is the first edition:
