Ernest Tidyman (1928-1994) was an American novelist and screenwriter, best known as the creator of the character John Shaft. He also wrote the screenplay subsequent film version of Shaft in 1971. Shaft was his third book, published in 1970, and follows the titular character, an African American private detective, around New York City as he attempts to rescue the daughter of Harlem's crime boss. Along the way, he contends with the Mafia, the Black militants, the NYPD, and City Hall. This is the first printing:
The 1971 Shaft film was one of the first in the blaxsploitation genre, and one of the most popular, marking a "turning point for this type of film, and spawning a number of sequels and knockoffs." It spawned numerous sequels, a 2000 remake starring Samuel L. Jackson, and it's rumored there's another remake in the works. Here's the trailer for the original 1971 film:
