Dark Green, Bright Red, Gore Vidal. First Edition.

Gore Vidal (1925-2012) was an American writer and public intellectual. He was born into a political family and sought elected office twice, first to the House of Representatives in 1960 and then the Senate in 1980. He wrote 24 novels and over 200 essays, with much of his political writing focusing on the history of the United States and the disastrous results of its militaristic foreign policy. He loved being a public intellectual, and his topical debates often led into spats with other public figures, perhaps most notably William F. Buckley. His fiction explored the nature of corruption in public and private life, with his perceptive eye perfectly capturing the psychology of his characters.

Dark Green, Bright Red was Vidal's sixth novel, published in 1950, and it concerns a revolution headed by a former dictator in an unnamed Central American country. It wasn't particularly well-received, with Kirkus Reviews stating it's "well-written, with authentic atmosphere, ... but not up to the mark of [Vidal's] earlier work." This is the first edition:
