Most of you probably know L. Ron Hubbard as the founder of the supremely strange religion (cult?) of Scientology. But he was also an extremely prolific writer of sci-fi, particular during the Golden Age of Science Fiction in the 1930s and 40s. In fact, he holds the Guinness World Record for most published works by one author – 1,084!!! This dude wasn't messing around, and at his peak he was churning out 100,000 words a month.
Buckskin Brigades, originally published in 1937, was Hubbard's first hardcover book and is actually a western. The plot deals with a white man, known as "Yellow Hair", living with the Blackfeet Native Americans in the early nineteenth century. After the death of the chief, Yellow Hair attempts to defend the tribe from fur traders, who are portrayed as evil savages. It's one of the early accounts of Native Americans that portrayed them in a sympathetic light, and was well-received. This is an uncommon hardcover reprint from 1977:
