The "Recommended Book List" Idea: Talking It Out
For the last week or so, I have been thinking through my idea of a list of books that I recommend. I've also been talking it out with my family. Books have been an important part of my life. It's only been the last decade or so that I have focused on other things, mostly technology and computers, to try to make money. Perhaps that was a mistake and I should have focused on my strengths.
I'm interested in creating a "curated bookstore", if only a virtual online bookstore. Though, I see lots of ways that I could experiment with selling books in person, too.
My wife also likes the idea of owning a bookstore, but we are not naive about the challenges that brick and mortar bookstores face.
We also love used books and plan to resell used books. Amazon and Barnes and Nobles can have new books sales. Used books are so much more fun because they are often out of print or have a life and a story of their own.
I'll write more specifics about my ideas and experiments, but I'll give some hints now:
- A mobile or pop-up bookstore in a trailer
- Book activism, reading and book selling as cultural activism
- Selling books for crypto, in marketplaces like OpenBazaar
Questions for you
Do you sell books? Or have you in the past? Do you keep a list of your favorite books that you recommend to friends and family? Has one book in particular changed your life for the better?
I'd like to hear from people who enjoy books. It'd be good to get to know you. This is "social media", after all, and even book-nerds can benefit from sharing their experiences.
Until next time,
I love books and have shelves full, although I am donating more and more of them to the library book sale. I do almost all my reading these days on my Kindle. I borrow ebooks from the library. I've been using Goodreads for several years to keep track of what I have read. I love having people recommend good books!
Thanks Melinda. I've just finished some more good books, but haven't posted about them here on Steemit yet. I still do most of my long form reading (books) in classic form. I'll be experimenting with electronic versions, but haven't read very many books that way yet.
It has allowed me to keep reading despite some physical challenges I have. My left hand doesn't work well and it was becoming impossible to hold the book while I turned the page. And I love that I can make the font as big as I want. I have loved books my entire life, but there are so many things that I am grateful to technology for as I get older!
I think you already read my post on The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Probably the only life altering author I’ve read. Unless you want to count ole JRRT with the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I figure those are a given for the fantasy genre!
As far as selling them, no experience here. I hope you are successful. There’s nothing like a big room full of old books. And I mean that in a good way. I wish more people were into bookstores. It’ll take someone like you who is passionate about them to turn the tide. Best of luck @matthewdavid
That is amazing idea @matthewdavid, I don't sell the books, but loves the books
