Sci-Fi Books i've read this year

in #books7 years ago

Science Fiction is genre which makes readers and writers to look beyond the reasonable, shakes up our imagination and dream about future. Often some old sci-fi books are like prophecies. I've started reading sci-fi at age of 8-9, with greatest maestro Jules Verne, fallowed by Edgar Rice Burroughs and many others. In next 20+ years have read hundreds of different books, may be more. Here i want to share some of books iv'e read this year.

Old Man's War - John Scalzi (2005)

Old Man's War is about a soldier named John Perry who joins the Colonial Defense Forces who protect human interplanetary colonists. He is 75 years old when he joins military. Colonial Defense Forces give new body and new life to old people and for that they fight.
Book is really fun to read, not too complicated and not too easy.
There are like 8-9 books in this universe.

Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds (2000)

About a million years ago on the planet Resurgam after mastering the technology of space travel, the Amaranth civilization died. Dan Sylveste is an archaeologist excavating the remains of the Amarantin race. As in Reynolds's other book there are several strands that merge as the novel progresses.
Book is first in Revelation Space universe.

Anathem - Neal Stephenson (2008)

Anathem is set on and around the fictional planet Arbre. Home of scientists, philosophers and mathematicians who do not leave the walls of monasteries. They must keep knowledge, and at the same time protect it from the impermanence of the secular world. Among them is the 19-year-old Raz who came to the monastery when he was eight, he is main protagonist who have to save the world.

Blindsight - Peter Watts (2006)

In the year 2082, thousands of large, coordinated objects of an unknown origin, dubbed "Fireflies", burn up in the Earth's atmosphere in a precise grid, while momentarily broadcasting across an immense portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, catching humanity off guard and alerting it to an undeniable extraterrestrial presence. It is suspected that the entire planet has been surveyed in one effective sweep. Humans finally know that we are not alone. The ship "Theseus" goes into space to establish contact with new civilization. But the reality turns out to be much more serious than any fantasies about extraterrestrial intelligence.

It's very realistic and hard hard science fiction book. Probably best iv'e read this year. Plot is very good and main protagonists (ship crew) are just awesome, especially vampire. ;)

Ringworld - Larry Niven (1970)

The novel takes place in the universe of the known space in 2850. Louis Wu - 200-year-old man goes with his colleague and two aliens to explore an unknown world - Ringworld: an artificial ring about one million miles wide and approximately the diameter of Earth’s orbit, encircling a sun-like star. The ringworld has a habitable, flat inner surface equivalent in area to approximately three million Earth-sized planets.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick (1968)

Book is well known, Blade Runner is based on it. It follows the story of Bounty Hunter Rick Deckard, whose job is to 'retire' renegade androids who have escaped from the outer colonies in post apocalypse universe.

Yeah, sci-fi is great! Try reading up some of Michael Crichton's, you'll love them!
