"This is the best Russian Learning Booklet in existence!" - mus

This nice-looking and pretty grammar book is responsible for most of the motivation I got to learn and the success I've had in learning the Russian language. It comes with a tough plastic frame cover, making it a handy thing to bring with you wherever you wanna go, and it is minimal, light and easy to hold and work with. I recommend getting hold of a physical work book, as opposed to using online material. Why? 1: Holding a book in your hands staring at a text that doesn't move or that has other things around it that will distract you spikes your level of concentration and focus, making the learning so much more effective. 2: Plowing your way through something tangible with pages is a very gratifying experience and will leave you satisfied every time you finish up your Russian practice session. 3: Reading books is pretty awesome. Yeah, this is a grammar book, but so what?

This book is not very long and not very hard at all in the way that it explains things to the reader. It is quite simplistic (in a good way, of course), and walks through the student using perfectly structured sentences to avoid making it convoluted. The things mentioned above make Natalia's work, in my opinion and experience, the best choice for anyone wanting to start learning this beautiful language. I'd say get your copy now for ten bucks or so.

Let's talk about its content

As short as it is, with an excellent table of contents, it makes all the steps and sections extremely easy to find, should you forget something and quickly need to look it up. I've read this book cover to cover many times. I only needed a few times to  You really don't need any thick, 1000-page  with endless grammar tables. That's for nerds. This is nothing nerdy. We're talking about learning a skill here. Language is a skill, and you need to learn the basics. Everything after that is feeding the machine of words, phrases and good habit. Russian Grammar gives you just enough to do just that.

At the very end follows a section of grammar tables. You have pages listing commonly used idioms, phrases, etc - perfect for any beginner!

Personal comments: I now speak fluent Russian, can hold conversation just about any topic, and I often hear people asking me if I actually am Russian. I have Natalia to thank for much of that. Of course, it takes enormous hard work, but this book gave me all the juicy basics I needed to set out on my journey to master Russian. (Which is the name another great source for learning Russian, by the way!)

While learning the language, did you have people around you who spoke Russian? I'm learning Spanish right now and using a course that prompts me to speak aloud - repeating them and answering their questions. I think it would be very difficult for me to learn a language without hearing native speakers say the words. Was that a challenge for you while learning from a book?

Of course! Since language is a skill, and since the skill is learned by constant communication and practice, speaking a foreign language is not a skill acquired in isolation. You must find a bunch of people you can talk to, and you need to talk to them often. I say don't even talk about the fact that you're learning. Just talk! Forget that you're in it for the practice. 'Cause that's what language is supposed to be, right? An unconscious thing you do. You're just supposed to talk and have conversation. That's my advice to you, my friend. :)
