Goodbye to Sridevi - A Bollywood Icon
I usually don't get too emotional in my admiration for celebrities. I can appreciate the talent of musicians and actors and applaud their creativity. However I have never understood people who will follow their favourite celebs to the ends of the earth. When Michael Jackson died I felt sad but I didn't break down and grieve for weeks on end like some of my friends.
But this week I felt emotional and heavy hearted when Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away. She was 54 years old and the mother of two teenage daughters. The cause of death was "accidental drowning" in the bathtub of her hotel room in Dubai. She was there to attend a family wedding. After hearing the news of Sridevi's death I felt sad but it was only after seeing a photo on a news site of her dead body dressed up for her funeral did it really hit me. To see someone who lit up the screen and was now so lifeless was heartbreaking.
Sridevi was a big part of the Bollywood movies I watched as a child and teenager. During the 80s and 90s she was probably the only actress who could hold a film on her own. Usually female actors were just eye candy and the hero carried the film. Sridevi shone in films like 'Chandni', 'Nagina', 'Lamhe' and "Laadla".
As a child I remember thinking she had the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. As an adult her style was something to aspire to. I know she wasn't a perfect person, she had her own battles in life and I doubt she had much of a childhood as she started acting when she was 4 years old. But she was definitely an actress that deserved respect. She was a self made success story and will always be remembered as a Megastar.
She starred in almost 300 films but I'll always remember her best as Seema in Mr India where both her comic timing and sensuality shone.
RIP Sridevi

I can understand why you got emotional @mummyimperfect. It is a part of Bollywood that left and through her films she was a part of your life too.
She was beautiful.
Thanks for sharing this post.
She was indeed.
Indeed sad and many people like you felt the same. At home recurring discussions of the loss and people feeling sad for a stranger. Life is uncertain.
Yes we never know what fate has in store for any of us. As a mother I can understand the impact of leaving two daughters behind. My heart goes out to them.
Yes I can understand being born in A Bengali family.. parents are so protective of their children.
“Accidental drowning,” sounds suspicious...IMHO
It's one of those things that sounds like a plot in a lame movie. Hard to believe it happened. I guess the public will never know exactly what happened.
Hi my dear! Me also i got this news from my husband, she was my favorite indian actress, but some people said that someone kill her not an accident.
If that's true I'm sure Bollywood will cover it up. We will never know what actually happened.
I knew her from the movie, English Vinglish.
You're right about her being very lively
It's so sad that she's dead...
I haven't seen that movie, it's been on my Must Watch list for a few years now!
I will definitely watch it soon.
