The Future Oil Demand

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

Energy markets are bracing for change. Many commentators see mass electrification of the vehicle fleet ‘ending the oil age’. It will not. However, oil products must increasingly be more cost-competitive with other fuels, suggesting a $25/bbl long-term price floor. Demand growth is also slowing structurally.

Even amidst electrification, I outline new growth opportunities for oil that would be preferable for individuals and the global economy, and secure a significant premium for oil versus other fuels.

Energy companies may wish to support these opportunities, while climate activists may wish to ban them. This post does not take a side, but outlines huge latent demand for travelling further, faster, creating exponential upside to energy use.

Flying vehicles: from science fiction to reality

In considering the renewable-energy revolution, many commentators are willing to assume technological improvements in solar, batteries and EVs. For a fair comparison, it is therefore necessary to consider technological improvements in oil-fuelled vehicles. Autonomous, high-speed flying vehicles could transform the oil market. Several precursors are commercially available. Watch the online demonstration videos and you will want one.

Flying cars: read this and you will want one

Developers of flying vehicles highlight their capability to fly above the traffic. It is worth noting the vastness of this improvement versus today’s baseline of urban travel.

Congestion is even worse in industrialising countries. 23 of the top 25 most congested cities are in emerging markets. China’s road density per capita, in particular, is just one-seventh that of the developed world. Some commentators argue oil demand is capped in China by the carrying capacity of the roads. Lifestyle benefits can accrue to individuals from speeding up travel.

The oil industry is therefore greatly incentivised to promote the adoption of flying vehicles when EVs are widely adopted. The carbon consequences are likely to face a backlash. However, as a consumer, it will be hard to resist the siren-song of rapid, door-to-door, autonomous flying: saving time, unlocking travel and improving lifestyles.

Sometimes fruitless browsing unveils a little gem, very nice post!

Thank you @Bukke, I appreciate very much your comment.

Awesome post. especially about the flying cars. Upvoted and followed.

Thank you ! I'll see you around then ;).

Nice idea, but the Chinese got it right over 50 years ago with the Flying Pigeon

Fogetabout petrol and associated downsides.
Cheers A.

Efficient, easy to ride and green !

Another spin on future oil demand will be the crypto-commodity Ether on the Ethereum blockchain, which is the fuel to make it run.

I Plan to write on cryptomining and energy consumption next.

Proof of stake will save so much electricity and cost. Miners will be upset, but the world will be a better place.
