I have tried ignoring the narc tendencies and being a friend anyway, but this dude tells you that you are attacking him, no matter what the evidence to the contrary, whilst badmouthing you to anyone that will listen."

Ah, been there, done that. Yep, it sure is a lot better to ignore those people completely instead of engaging with them in any possible way.
