Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 01/26/18> How many secrets get taken to the grave?
Normally when I pull this laptop out at the end of the day and power it up I have pretty darn good idea about what it is that I am going to embed on the block chain for eternity. Some days it is hard to decide because I’ll have two or three subjects that I feel are equally worthy of being selected, this is not one of those days.
I made it back home Thursday night from being out of town for three days and it was a bitter sweet homecoming. Like always, it’s good to be home, but with the events that happened this past week everyone in the house is upset over the passing of Percy. Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10:00 AM at the family cemetery.
Death is an interesting subject, as morbid as that sounds, but it really is and we really don’t have any rock solid answers about what actually happens after we exhale our last breath. We all have heard the stories from people who had near death experiences and those that claim to have been taken to the “light” and then end up back in their bodies and revived. The thing about those people is that they haven’t taken their last breath so the stories while may be true, they don’t qualify under my scenario of last breath.
I don’t do well when it comes to death, and it really doesn’t matter what or who has died, death is just so final and impacting. I’ve had to bury my parents already and it is not an easy task. Luckily for me I have two brothers and a sister and while we may not have been that close in our younger years, age and death does bring you closer together. When I was in school I had several friends who were the “only child” and I hate to think how having to go through that situation alone would have been for me if I was an only child.
Recently I have been hearing some advertising on the radio in my truck while I’m driving for a company called Legacy Films. Just like you might imagine from the name the company comes out and does a film documentary on a person’s life for a fee. That way the person can tell their own story in their own words and nothing will be distorted or details left out. Is that not a great idea? I don’t know what they charge for this service, but we are all capable of doing the same thing even if all you have to record with is just a cell phone.
Who is going to tell your story after you have taken your last breath? Are they going to tell it they way you would have wanted it to be told? Will they lie about you? Most of you know why I came here to steemit.com since I’ve had to tell it about three times since I’ve been here. Those of you who haven’t heard it, here is the briefest explanation. I’m here telling my story for my future grand kids in case I’m gone before they make here.
I thought having a written blog that the grand kids could read, saved on the block chain, was the best possible way to accomplish what I wanted to do, tell my stories. Well I was wrong, digital video saved on the block chain would be best.
I don’t know the workings of how the block chain works, I don’t know anything about the storage capabilities of it either, I guess I’m here on blind faith that it is being stored for perpetuity, at least that has been my understanding.
So if one of you folks with more knowledge and experience in this block chain stuff would consider this suggestion. Why not start a Steem Legacy Film Vault on the block chain? Make it a place where people could post their life story for future generations to access and learn about their ancestors straight from the horse’s mouth. It could be limited to one film for each account on the steem block chain, also it could be updated once a year ,but only the latest film would be available for viewing. As a new film is uploaded, the preceding film would be no longer available for viewing. It might be still on the block chain but the record would no longer be associated to the account, kind of a lost in space scenario if you know what I mean. Or maybe it could be deleted, if all the witnesses agree that a new film has replaced the existing one. Like I said, I don’t know how it works, but surely someone out there knows.
Stop and think for a minute on how many secrets have been taken to the grave with people. Now that I think about it even further, in order to access the film a person would need the master key for the steem account to access that Legacy Film Vault account, that way if there were any family secrets or end of life confessions made on the recording the family could decide how or what they would do with the information. This could replace written wills in probate cases if that is what the person wanted to do, updating wills can be expensive with the attorney fees and such; this film could replace those wills very easily. What judge could over rule what the owner of the property had to say about dispersing his personal property? There might be a judge or two out there but there is also appeals courts if that happened.
I know this idea has a lot of holes in it, but smarter minds than mine could take this idea and make it work. When and if that happens then you people won’t have to read my crazy stories and dumb ideas any longer, they will be in my legacy film for my future grand kids. So, is it an idea worthy of consideration? Tell me what you folks think; would you take advantage of the opportunity? Even you younger folks need to think about it, you never know when your number will be up, and that last breath will be taken.
Until next time,
@sultnpapper
i like this concept...im just as dumb as you about accomplishing it...but conceptually... wow. there could be witnesses...people that are like witnesses...just sitting in the back ground....haha paid notary type folks o or family members...thats fun to think about...feels like a short story about a future reality
Hey, I'm not dumb, I am ignorant; let's not start calling people names guzbucker. But I am glad you like it, it could really help people in "third world" areas like the USA. Most people die without a will here from what I have heard. For a developed country we have plenty of poor people and this could come in handy for sure.
well im dumb as door nails wishing i could just be good ol ignorant
I always wondered about that saying "dumb as door nails" until I watched a lady nail her door shut to keep her husband out of their apartment. I need to check your blog and see what you've been up too.
Travel safe .
The idea of having a vault (film or otherwise) accessible by master key only is quite interesting. I believe currently everything on the block chain is publicly visible but I'm sure that this vault idea somehow can be implemented. Some of the younger ones should be able to work this out...
Thanks for dropping by Edward, I don't know if it is or not so that is why I posed the question. Seeing how it is not a financial transaction it might be a doable thing.
One of the reasons I am here my friend..to blog-log some of my thoughts, experiences and insights for posterity...
Do enjoy the day making your empathy work while you are still around to do so!
Well great @clicketyclick it beats trying to do it when your no longer able, that's for sure and certain. They say great minds think a like, but they never say great for what, I wonder if this would be a part of that what?
Mmm...I'll go for a slightly more modest "sensible minds think alike" option. Words like "great" and the like give me the heebie-jeebies (hope the spelling is right) - and what's more, 'sensible' is sensible as much as 'true' is true and 'honest' is honest. Whatever, I think this option at least gets us past this "great" conundrum..I hope!
Well I'm not sure we even had a conundrum until you decided to change that old saying from great to sensible, my concern was on the "what" and is that what part of the "is" in this post. So now it looks like we have compounded the dilemma with a conundrum and we still haven't figured out the "what" , now I'm concerned if we try and take this any farther we may in fact end up with a third issue, and that might make for a major train wreck, so I am just going to leave it where we found it.
Thanks for stopping by and visiting.
Skol!
This is a great idea where we can save our legacy somewhere so that our grandchildren have the chance to view them one day. I am in my 40s and although it is long journey to go before I have grandchildren, I already think of my last day on earth in a positive sense, that is i want my body to be burned, not buried. Perhaps I have an old mind 😁 Nowadays really there are many secrets buried at the grave, and my husband and I always occasionally talked on many recipes of our great great grandmother's delicacies which now none of us know how to cook. So your idea is definitely is worth the piece of thought. hope one day it can be materialised.
Oh the art of deception appears to be at work with you, using a picture from your teenage years and then let is slip that you are in your 40's, I caught that one Jade. Glad you liked the idea and that you think it is worth consideration.
Sorry to hear about Percy. I also don't deal with death all that well. My father died when I was younger and I also lost a younger brother several years back. Your idea isn't that outlandish. I've heard of stories where people make videos and put them in a safety deposit box and when they die, their loved one receive the video, similar to a legacy film
Yes, people do as you said with the safety deposit boxes but those are not available for all folks for various reasons, this platform would make it available to folks all around the world with a couple clicks of a mouse. Really just trying to emphasize that we have tools that sometimes we overlook on different ways to use them, this would be just one more way to help.
Yeah you're right, this way it would be accessible to everyone. I don't know how many people would watch them, but as of yet, there really is no way to tell how much of a demand there is. It's like when the Ipad came out. I cursed it up and down, saying there was no reason for anyone to buy one, yet here I am a few years later with one myself
The intent of my idea with this would be it would serve as an electronic safety deposit box, only each account only accessible with a key, essentially a virtual lock box that would serve as a private not for public viewing such as Dtube.
I think it is a good idea. The video would be your legacy to future generations and the truth from the horse's mouth couldn't be twisted. I don't see why wills could not be done in this manner. No more tie-ups in court due to someone contesting what the person wanted to do with their estate.
I know that video wills have been used, the main thing would be sharing and storing the legacy on the block chain, making it available to the world as far as storage and safe keeping.
Thanks for sharing your agreement with the idea.
