Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 01/18/18> How do you like your spam? Okay, fried it will be…
One of the most enjoyable experiences I have here on steemit is seeing very deserving people get rewarded for their hard work and effort. The fact is, it really doesn’t happen often enough because quite frankly I don’t hang, roll with, or follow any high rollers on here. So, when a person that I am close with puts up a post that immediately passes the $100 mark it really is a joy for me to see them being rewarded.
Wednesday, I got to experience that joy when @ethandsmith posted his work that included a podcast and written transcript, The Steem Engine Expresss Episode 4. The post hadn’t been on the platform for twenty minutes when I spotted it. I listened to the podscast over in Dsound and then went back and wrote a brief comment and upVoted the post. By the time I had done the listening and commenting three others had upVoted the post, well a couple heavy hitters popped it full bore evidently and the earnings were over $120.00
I dropped in at the local discord channel where Ethan has been known to frequent in the mornings and congratulated him on how the post was being accepted. He was aware and he said that now the “spammers” were starting to show up.
Spammers have probably been around since day two of the internet and they are really a pain.
They ride in and start blowing up the comments with two to five word comments that most times don’t even vaguely seem to have any idea on what the post was about. If you take a trip to their home page and click on comments you will find that the same exact comment was used on the last 10 to 20 posts they “commented” on.
About a week ago I had posted a daily dose and a spammer showed up and threw his comment on my post. Before I had even gotten around to see the spam a fellow by the name of @fknmayhem stepped up and went on to blast the spammer with both barrels. His exact quote, “Dang man, you have missed so many awesome days. I suggest you take some time and start reading sultnpapper’s archives.
Together with that awesome recommendation take the warning that next time I find a trash spam comment like that from yours here, I may not be as nice.” I really appreciated @fknmayhem for jumping this guy for spamming. He actually was nicer than I might be had I ever decided to get involved and voice my opposition to those spammers.
Up until Wednesday I don’t recall ever flagging anyone, so taking a cue from @fknmayhem , I went back and looked at a couple of the spam comments on Ethan’s post and decided to get involved. I checked the spammers’ comments on the home page and just as I suspected virtually all the comments were a copy paste of the previous comment.
I planted a couple flags on them and left them a not so nice comment as well, just my way of showing support for my friend Ethan.
I think we all need to step up and start helping each other in this regard. I don’t know about you, but Spam in a can isn’t for me and neither is the variety being peddled on here. So let’s all start getting involved and stepping in with a flag or two when it is blatant spamming.
But a word a caution, in my haste to get these spammers I actually flagged my own post as well. Fortunately my friend Ethan noticed it and PM’d me in discord to alert me so I could correct it, which I did. So while he was kind enough to keep my error a secret and not embarrass me in the group, it won’t stop me from doing it here. So, I screwed up, big deal, it wasn’t the end of the world and it was funny too, as were my comments to the spammers.
So, my thanks to @fknmayhem for showing me by example on when to call out these spammers, my thanks and congratulations as well to @ethandsmith for his friendship and post.
Until next time,
@sultnpapper
@sultnpapper You've got a whole blog of Daily Dose of Sultnpapper. McDonalds does not stand a chance. Spam is too salty and we get all the Salt we need from you. I will stop by again. You are the salt and light.
Well I appreciate you stopping by and getting your share of what I'm serving up, some days are lightly seasoned others days it gets a massive amount, one thing you can always count on is will be available. Life needs seasoning otherwise it would be to bland.
Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

I find that spammers are so hateful ... and I suppose that’s the point. But I just can’t find the reasoning in some people’s rudeness regardless of their agenda. Spam makes me want to throw the computer out sometimes. Frustrating to say the least.
@jeejee
Anything to make a few extra pennies is what they must be thinking, it is rude for sure.
Spammers a such an unimaginative lot. Like having a gnat flying around your head at a picnic. They have slowed down a bit on my posts. There for a while it was getting pretty tiresome.
That is a real good analogy. I rate them higher on the annoyance scale than bots. Bot's just do as they are programmed live spammers make the decision to do it.
They are a nuisance. It doesn’t take long to become immune to them but I actually (occasionally) like them. Like them as a free snark outlet.
Surprisingly it happened more than once that I gained an actual active follower (not merely here, also on “old-school” blogs). I wish interfaces would show through which app/interface comments were posted, just like busy.org does with posts (see attached screenshot). That would help with identifying bot accounts which interact directly with the blockchain. Finding the few lost souls who aren’t fully lost yet and may be willing to learn would be easier.
I may need to look at "busy" again, I tried it one time and didn't know that it would upVote my own post automatically , that I needed to un-check a box in order to keep that from happening, and I got mad at that site and swore I would never use it again. But now that I have cooled down over that initial episode I may revisit it, I did like that it had "book marks". Thanks for reminding me, there may be other things as well that I might have missed that I would like.
This was a great read. I know we exchanged all of this info yesterday in real time, but it's always fun to read about your perspective in these situations.
I appreciate you stepping in with the flags. Sometimes I think it's worth trying to redeem the spammers, but other times it's easier just to call them out like you did yesterday.
Thanks for sharing!
I felt it was worth sharing, we all need to step up our game on trying to make this a better place.
Definitely. I'm glad that you take a constructive approach with our group members, though. It's likely that many people don't realize that's what the proper way to comment looks like. There's a great post about commenting that's pretty old at this point, but it still does the job, if you want something to refer people to in the future!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks . I 'll check that post out and try and keep that link at hand for future use.
I never understood why email apps never had whitelists as default, that could have killed at least all the email spam.
I havn't noticed spam here on steemit, but now i'm aware of it i'll keep an eye out for it.
The spammers tend to target new users and posts that look like will have a large curation earnings pool.
They target new users who are inclined to upVote anything, and most will upVote their own spam comment so that the person receiving the spam will be more inclined to upVote the comment as well. It is an old trick but works plenty of times on new users.
The "curation pool" spammers just want a cut of the pool, posts that have higher earnings and lower numbers of upVotes are the prime "steak" so to speak. More reward with no effort.
Not sure about the emails, I know I can block emails from addresses if they are spamming me.
Nice post
I happened to see that you recently joined thesteemengine, welcome aboard. You may want to go back and read what the group is all about, the group does not consider two word comments as engagement. Normally I would consider this type of comment as "spam" but since the post was about spam and spammers I'll consider this comment as "humor" on your part, even though you and I know that it wasn't intended as such. I can say that in all confidence and I would point to your three word comment on @karinzdailygrind as supporting evidence to this statement I have made.
So please do everyone in the group a favor and live up to expectations of your fellow members.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and acceptance of my suggestion,
@sultnpapper
I guess you are right am new here. Not even a month. Actually am new to steemit as a whole. And some rules and group regulations am not familarized with. So dont take it too seriously. It a starter mistake. Anyway i will make up to the standard next time and try to make as much as i can to make a posetive contribution to the socoty as a whole.
Respect
Even outside of thesteemengine group comments that show you read the post are what are looked for in the steemit community so it would be wise to only post thoughtful relevant comments as a whole. There are plenty of people who upvote comments and you can earn a fair amount of steem just commenting. Again, welcome and enjoy yourself in the group and the community as a whole.
