How To Cope With Attention-Seeking Behavior
Parenting is difficult when parents don't know the right way to cope with difficult situations. One of such situations is when kids start using their shouting and whining to seek attention. Ignoring such behavior seems adding fire to fury in such a situation because if you do so, your kid will raise his voice to shout louder but this is not the case when you do planned ignoring also called actively ignoring your child technique. If done right, this technique can help your kid change his negative behavior.
Parents feel that ignoring their child might hurt him emotionally but they should understand that it's not your child you're ignoring but his negative behavior. Kids start having fun when parents respond to their negative behaviors. So, it's sort of having some audience that's listening to them. This is absolutely not good for your kid. When there is no audience for such a behavior, he will stop doing it.
Using such a technique with some other techniques like rewards and timeouts are proven tools to bring discipline in your child's life. All you have to do is to be strong and ignore the negative behavior of your child until he starts behaving and then your can give him the required attention. This way, he will learn something and will not continue with his tantrums because he failed to get your attention the last time and this will become the reference point for him in future.
