Singapore Esplanade - The Waterfront Theatre renamed "the Durian"

In a Sunday evening stroll with two friends to the city, I was excited to have taken a picture of the eye-catching buildings in Singapore, that sit nearby Marina Bay Sands. It is known as Theatres on the Bay - the Esplanade. The conceived world-class performing arts centre, opened in 2002, is a memorable part of Singapore’s skyline.

The Locals labelled the boldly designed twin structures with glass domes on the waterfront that look a lot like the spiky smelly tropical fruit, “the Durian” as actuality unique to this part of the world. Some say it resembles the eyes of a fly.

Love it! The Esplanade Mall holds a multi-purpose arts centre integrating a Concert Hall, Theatre and a wide outdoor performance area. An array of fantastic shows brings to the bay area of the city along with some great shopping and dining experiences.

The place is perfect whether you are there to enjoy an evening of culture, watching local bands perform on stage or relishing the performances of traditional dancing from Malaysia and Thailand, they were shown free of charge. Easy getting there, take the MRT to City Hall or Esplanade Circle Line station; it is about ten-minute walk away.

There are regular classic concerts, popular pop and rock bands also perform here with a mix of both western and Asian dance, opera and theatre. The Theatre main venue, decorated in traditional red and gold was inspired by Europe’s opera houses with a horseshoe shape and curved seating. If you’re in the mood for some Shakespeare or perhaps a modern dance performance, you’ll find a chance at the 2,000-seat. Or like the outdoor performances, they are free to the public and no need to book, making Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay a great place for an evening stroll with a lot more to it, be it locals or tourists. The covered stage resembling a trio of white sails, and is enough seating for over 450 people.
