About resteeming and how I maintain my blog

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

I recently read a post where someone was talking about resteeming, which triggered me to start writing this post.

The post was saying that we should use the resteem button often to show our appreciation for an article. And while this is true to some extend, I think resteeming should be done with care. I 100% agree that very usefull articles deserve to be resteemed. However, showing your appreciation for an article can also be done by upvoting it.

I don't resteem often, and here's why: I have my own page feed and followers to think of.

By now, most of my followers will know what my main topics are. For those who don't, it's photography, gaming and food. I try to keep up a steady flow of content surrounding these topics. I don't want to focus too much on just one, because I feel I owe it to my followers to maintain a certain standard. I also enjoy all three topics, so that works out fine.

(I do stray from my main subjects from time to time, because I also enjoy the occassional brain dump, so to speak. I know not everything is of equal quality, but I hope most of my posts are well received.)

However, lately, I haven't been sharing a lot of my own food blogs. I haven't had a lot of inspiration, so there isn't much to write about. To make sure the topic of food does not get lost completely, I try to resteem someone else's food post from time to time. (The latest example of this is this chocolate cake by @kawthar.)

I resteem these posts for two reasons:

  1. I liked the post and think the author deserved the extra attention.
  2. I'm falling short on the topic, so I feel I owe it to my followers to fill it in like this.

Other resteems are rare, but I do them on occassion, when I really see the use for it (or it is a brilliant article). I don't resteem often, because it not only fills up my own feed, it also clogs up my follower's feeds, while they did not ask for that when they started following me.

I know not everyone will agree with these methods and I really don't mind people who do resteem a lot. I think it's very kind of you and as long as it is not a constant stream of resteems, I will not unfollow you for it. Until this day, there has only been one account that I unfollowed, because of the endless stream of resteem spams (combined with his own spam posts, mind you).

Everyone has their own purpose for their blog, which I fully support. We can all see a user's activity before we follow them, so we know what we can expect.

What are your thoughts on resteeming? Do you do it often? What makes you decide to click (or not click) that resteem button?

I completely agree. Sometimes I see the same article resteemed twice or more.

Exactly. Many times, that'll be an article of a whale who really doesn't need many resteems, because everyone and their mom are already following them. I enjoy resteeming lesser known users more and even then, not too often :-)

This is helpful. Thanks.

Thank you, I'm glad to hear that :-)

I agree with many of your points. It is nice to give a hand to those just starting out, and to re-steem great articles, but it is also hard when it fills your feed, as many people are trying to create a blog of their work. I wish the two could be kept somehow separate. And I like your take on this, it is everyone's own business what they wish to do, and follow through with. Thanks for the thoughtful article.

Thank you for your comment!

Busy.org does actually show two seperate tabs when viewing a profile. I just don't really want to switch to Busy.

Makes sense. So much to keep track of.

I know not everyone will agree with these methods and I really don't mind people who do resteem a lot

I actually do. Resteems can get very spamy. I think that many new people dont realize, that they dont really do anyone a favor by resteeming an article of someone who has 1K+ followers.

Well, but resteeming @kawthar is hard to resist, did you try those pancakes? You should love them as a dutch person! (you know because its sweet and actually kind of healthy)

Luckily, you only see resteems when you follow someone, so if they are really spamming them, you can always unfollow. I hope some read this article though, because I'm pretty sure the bad habits we see displayed here are not all deliberate. There are plenty of users who just don't know better.

I know! I resteemed two of her posts now. I think that's about a third of all of my resteems on this platform! I actually made oatmeal pancakes a couple of time before her post, because I wanted them a bit healthier. Her pictures make the food look extra delicious though!

yeah, Im scared to put on food pictures myself because they would pale in comparison. I got a recipe to rebuild the original McSausage TS really easily, cheap and delicious, but I am afraid to post about it, because of @kawthar s professionalism.

@thatgermandude Dude! Definitely post it. Sounds soo good. I plan to write a post soon about tips for taking pictures for posts! Sneak peak spoiler alert: Natural lighting is your BEST FRIEND!

thanks for the tip, looking forward to the tutorial, your pictures look so gorgeous all the time!

Now, I got a good reason to postpone my burger recipe! :3 Also I just ate four of them, they are way too easy to make! D:

haha I guess I did just give you a reason. Looking forward to it!

Aww, there are all sorts of qualities in food posts on here! Some write good recipes/directions, some have good pictures and some just have it all!
Just look at @gringalicious and be amazed at her awesome pictures! I don't take food pictures like that. Not even close. I still enjoy sharing a recipe from time to time :D

Just do it! Everyone can take a picture, they don't have to be perfect :-)

@playfulfoodie @thatgermandude , Aww thank you guys so much for liking my content!! I definitely feel encouraged by your feedback to keep posting. Been MIA for a few days but I'm back yay! Thanks again for all the support and resteems!

For the most part, I don't resteem much. Now, the last day and a half, I have resteemed more than usual, but it's not a pace I intend to keep.

I'm not really a "focus on just a couple parts of myself" kinda guy. I'm a "take all of me or none of me" type of guy.

So far, most of my resteems have been on topics that interest me, but I have yet to contribute much if anything to.

Resteeming definitely should be done thoughtfully. That's why when you resteem, it asks you if you're sure. It's asking you to take a moment to think about it before you resteem it.

Resteeming too much makes it harder to find your original content. I've unfollowed a handful of people already because they were 90%+ resteems.

If I find a resteem I like in new or a specific category, I'm gonna go follow the original poster of that article, not the person that resteemed it.

I'll stop rambling on now.

Long story short, I mostly agree with you.

Thank you very much for your long story, sir! I'm glad to see you agree with me :D

I like it when other users like longer comments/conversations, lol. :D

I love when my posts spark a conversation! I've had a couple of them this last week that gathered so many comments. Makes me happy that it gets people to think and write :-)

I love that, too! I've been making a daily post trying to do just that, but aside from the first time I made it, I only get a couple upvotes, no comments. I'm persistent, though.

I will make it a thing! >:D

Yes! Don't give up on it. I know it takes a while for new users to gather a following and such. Persistance is key :D

I agree with you, resteeming should be done with care. Resteem is a good way to share some contents that we like to share with our followers, but resteem too many time in the day maybe like a spam for our followers. So, I think "resteem with care" is the better way ^_^

Thank you for your thoughts! I'm glad you agree ^^

Very true. It is almost like Twitter and RT's. You don't want to RT too much because it takes away from your own voice and makes your page less about YOU. Thanks for the post!

Thank you for your comment!

agreed. a few days ago, I put up a post advising newbies no to bury themselves in resteems...and then I ran off 9-10 resteems in a row myself LOL

resteeming can be a way of contributing to the platform, but unless you are established as a writer, your advice to keep them at a minimum should be repeated

Hah, it can happen when there's a lot of good content I guess!

Yeah, I think filling up your feed with resteems hides your own identity, so how would people know they like your content enough to follow you?

I really wanted to add a totally different aspect: me getting resteemed by famous people like @dwinblood and @stellabelle felt reeeaally good.

I think resteeming someone smaller or same sized can be a nice token of appreciation. Just realized you are much bigger than me despite that fish symbol.... well the 66 should have given it away or maybe ur 666 follower post... ^^*

Yes, it really does feel good to get a resteem from people like that! Or an upvote for that matter :-)

Ah, I've had a bit of a head start on you! I've been here since the start of this year :-)

I think I sorted you as "new user", because we often met in comment threads of others and most people I met that way were rather small.

Well, I try to spend some time sorting through introduction posts, so I find some new members to follow and support. Maybe that's why.

The amount of time I spend on here has nothing to do with anything!

We completely agree! To be honest we didnt resteem anything yet. The main reason so far is because it is all new to us. After reading this article we will, as the article interests us and the author deserves more attention;-)

Oh yes, I know I didn't resteem for a long while when I just started here. First you need to discover how everything works :D

Thats right. We're trying to, but it's sometimes not that simple haha

I know, it can be very confusing in the beginning! You'll get there :D
