Groovy Grannies

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

My plan yesterday was to recharge my batteries with a walk in the woods but a cold had other plans for me. Before long I was curled up on the sofa feeling very sorry for myself. I needed a quick and easy project to cheer me up so I delved into my yarn stash looking for the most cheerful yarn I could.

Yarngasmic

Finally, an impulse purchase paid off, I bought this yarn on a whim some time ago but once I got it home I was unsure what to do with it so it sat in my stash patiently waiting for me to be inspired. Well I wasn't so much as inspired but more desperately in need of a pick me up, so in between doses of cold placebos, snoozing and brief visits to steemit I got to work making these groovy granny squares, which will each get a cream border and be stitched together to make a cheerful blanket.

Just for fun here are some groovy granny facts.

  1. Granny square blankets are a favourite with set designers. Large blocks of colour can be distracting so they often use granny square blankets to break up the block a sofa creates. They also help create a sense of warmth or comfert so often feature in the homes of mothers, grandmothers or childhood bedrooms. As crochet became increasingly popular with younger people over the last 10 years or so we also increasingly see them in the homes of younger characters such as The big bang theory's Amy.

  2. There is a record for the world's largest granny square it's a whopping 1,311 square feet of granny goodness made of 500,000 double crochet stitches. It took one man 30 miles of yarn and nearly 3 years to make.

  3. There was a mixture of excitement and laughter in the crochet world earlier this year when designer Rossetta Getty 's Granny Square Cardigan went viral. While dedicated followers of fashion where forking out £1,962 for this fugly fashion must have crocheters made their own for £50 or less.

well it's time for me to take another placebo and invoke my inner granny by making some more of these squares, but while I'm away why not leave a comment letting me know what you think of that cardigan.

You know my weaknesses.. love a bit of granny crochet!

I had to fit them in at some point for you.

You already know I love granny squares can't wait to see your granny square blanket. Hope your feeling better soon hun xx

It's like a rainbow!

I've tried making granny squares and simply don't have the patience for them. Right now the only thing I crochet are hammocks for my ferrets. They're dirty little bastards and their hammocks get all mucked up so instead of washing them, I just make new ones from scratch. LOL

I like them because i don't have to think when making them, and if I just have 10 minutes to spare I can whip on up and throw it in the basket with it's brothers then sew them up when i have enough.
I have to admit I don't get the appeal of ferrets at all, they are one of those critters that make my skin want to run away lol.

These will look amazing stitched together for a blanket, cheery and bright, well done :)

I'll be adding a cream border to each one before i stitch them together, I was laying them out before and it looked like a unicorn had vomited on the sofa.

I like the badge ;-)

hehe me to :D

That is one heck as cheerful yarn, can't wait to see a big ole snuggly rainbowesque blanket!!!
