Having to do my yearly appraisal.

In the spotlight.

It's just one of those things that comes with the job. Filling out that evaluation form and having to break down all of the weaknesses and strengths from the past year. As my job I am the deputy manager of the retail store that we run and have been working under the same line manager for 8 years so it isn't something that we take too seriously and on a few occasions have even filled out the paperwork over a few pints of guinness keeping it nice and informal. Unfortunately this year the area manager insisted on sitting in for the appraisal which means we had to do it properly in a conference room.

We get appraised on:

  • Performance
  • Communication
  • Training skills
  • Business skills
  • Development
  • Potential for advancement

Overall it was fairly positive with my two bosses happy with the performance over the year. There were areas that i had worked on since last year and it went very smoothly with most of the discussion focused on progression and the next few steps to get there. Overall the topic of conversation was building my brand withing the company so that the people at the top can see the value that i have there and what i can bring to the position. It just really put me thinking about STEEM and what we are going through at the moment with trying to improve on the performance of last year and build the brand going forward.

It can be good to sit back and look around

So much of the job is fast paced and full on that we rarely get a chance to take scope with what we are doing and look at the bigger picture. I might not enjoy filling out the paperwork and having to evaluate myself but it can be beneficial. Especially to step out of the environment for a while and take a proper look at what is going on.

Just to sit down and talk through what has been done for the past year and what the plan is going into the next one. It's pretty much what has been going on in the steem alliance for the past few weeks as they try to plan for the next year. Looking at the weaknesses from the past 12 months and putting steps in place to improve those areas over the next year.

Hopefully it will be a good twelve months before the next one and that we are all in a better postion at that stage.

There's a lot of value in looking back at ones' performance and evaluating I think. If shows what's working well, what can be built upon and developed and what needs amending, adjusting and strengthening. Honest self-evaluation is something all adults should do all the way through life, and not just at the workplace.

Oh, not only cannot identify areas for improvement as you say, I think it's also a chance to isolate the success's and positives and celebrate them; Maybe not with a party, but with a simple acknowledgement of a job well done.

Good post.

Have to agree with you on that. So much of the time it goes unsaid but a simple well done can go a long way to keeping people motivated and happy at work. Feedback is important to everybody both good and bad as long as it is given in the right way. I have to do it a lot but if you explain to people where the standard hasn't been met and how they can get there in the right manner you can bring them forward and to a better standard.

Then the next time you can give them more positive feedback and help to push them even further in the right direction. It can be a lot harder to do it on yourself but it can be very beneficial.

As time consuming and boring as it could sometimes be, that feedback with your superiors is great to have a vision of where to improve and focus on in the future. Your efforts towards progress will be great talking about during the next opportunity.

I just find it hard to evaluate myself more than anything. It's really tough to sit down and think about how you perform on a daily basis. What you do well and what needs improvement. It's easy to rate other people as you can see them every day but very hard to see oneself.
