Taking a break: Curation is killing me! (but hey, worth it)

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

I'm going to skip 'What I learnt last week' today. It's not like anybody is keeping track. But i've been really busy with curation and generally out of sorts.

The SteemSTEM team went on the once-in-a-lifetime trip to the CERN collider, a huge particle smasher built to unlock the secrets of the Universe in Switzerland/France.

I've actually been to the nearby museum before but you need proper booking and timing (once a year maybe) to get a tour inside, which wasn't planned when I visited. So I'm pretty disappointed that I live in China, and even more disappointed that I might actually be back in England come May - close enough to go! But I'm super happy for everybody who managed to go and I can't wait to see the upcoming posts about the experience.

But yeah I've been left behind to vote all the SteemSTEM posts the last 2 or 3 days and it has taken a lot of time outta my day. Here's some perspective:

Here's the browser tabs for the first wave of posts I had to curate yesterday. This is from the main curation channel (thanks @zest for that bombardment!)

The curators (Thank f**** they're still around) find and read good content, check for plagiarism, originality etc and then submit them. I then read them all again and double check these things before giving it the go ahead and giving a SteemSTEM and Curie upvote.

Some users are 'white listed', trusted users that have earned their position to almost guarantee an upvote without much concern for plagiarism so they're generally quicker to check (you learn their writing style, for example). Others are 'grey listed' and they take ages because they sometimes rile up suspicion, forcing me/us to dig deeper into possible translation and so forth.

After this, I went into the sub-communities ; groups of SteemSTEM covering different nations including Italian, German, Spanish, Nigerian, Yugoslavian and French. We have a couple of curators in each one to check these things, and our main management team speak some of those languages, too. After the greenlight, here's the result:

By this point it was approaching 4PM so I took a break and did my own post. our VP runs low if we do too much so some time is needed to recharge, and people need to write anyway.

Later on that day, I get a second wave:

That's 73 posts!!!

Yesterday I had to read and check 73 fricking posts! In fact, more.

I managed to find 2 users translating their work: Plagiarism.

In this case, the users made my life a little easier, since they slipped up a tiny bit (shall remain unnamed) which gave me something to start my investigation on, and the rest is history.

All in a day's work...

So yeah, I've been doing the same work today so far but the others will finally be back. Either way I'm going to give my weekly post a break, but I'll post something else later anyway. I've been meaning to do my next music post but never found a day to slip it in so maybe that's something I'll do later. shrug, see you all later!

And to the rest of the SteemSTEM team

Thank CERN you're back!

Curation is a difficult job and plagiarism or the possibility thereof, makes it even more difficult. Even though we may not be counting how many times you post what you learned in the week, we see it and I am certain that some people look forward to it.

This is the second time I have read you talk about how you missed CERN. Do not worry. I am sure you will get to go within this lifetime. There are many selfless, hardworking, awesome people here whose work go unnoticed most of the time, but the reward must come. Thank you for curating our contents. I am glad you can take a little break now.

All the best.

I tend to work in the shadows but I know my work is appreciated - all the better when people such as yourself show that appreciation too =D

The very real help we've done for people is such a great thing to witness so I don't mind, and I will definitely get to CERN one day if it kills me!

Thanks for keeping track of my posts =)

Yes, the best works are done in the shadows. You have no idea how the work you do affect people from my part of the world but I will tell you a little.

When I came on steemit, I wrote stories. I don't know if they were any good because I had never written stories anywhere else before and steemit critique is nothing to go by. While I enjoyed writing the stories, I had no background in literature so I had no idea what I was doing. When I found #steemstem, I just could not write stories anymore. Now, I am learning how to write better stories by studying the methods of successful writers. I am also getting better in my style of writing science and engineering posts.

I have stopped looking for another job like I had been doing since 2016 and I am focusing on developing myself in doing the things I really love. I have been able to do these things because of the consistency of curators such as yourself in finding my posts and rewarding them.

Getting yourself to CERN will not kill you, I am sure. And no, you will get your reward in this life. I don't see why you have to wait until afterlife or another life for that matter.

You're appreciated.

That's great to know. I've seen people buying new laptops, those who had been writing on steemit with their phones, pay off their debt and so much more. It's a reward in itself really! Glad you've had a difference come to you =)

Very much so. Of course, I changed my old laptop. I didn't even mention that. Thank you for replying my comments even though you should be resting :)

We all love you @mobbs!!!!
I just want to let anyone reading this comment know, that you guys have no idea how much of effort @mobbs put into helping authors of STEM -related posts on this amazing platform, and it is an absolute pleasure to be part of his team :)
Apology for the overload of posts:)
You ROCK!!!!!

Ever the enthusiast @zest! Thanks a lot for the plug AND the curation content, we're doing great ^__^

Thank you for revealing your curation work. It is needed once in a while to see how it is done and how much effort it takes. I appreciate a lot that you are taking responsibility.

I would actually like to be of service or to support you but don't know where to take that time besides my work and raising a child. In order to get brakes, it seems that the curation team takes care of one another. Great thanks also to everyone who felt spoken to.

Sincerely,
yours Erika

Thankfully at least for now we have at least one person around whenever others are away, and we generally cover all time zones so we're doing alright ^__^ as for servicing us, just keep producing that awesome work you do! We enjoy them thoroughly =)

Your hard work will be awarded in the after life. In the meantime, keep pushing.

well that sucks, there is no afterlife... i've been conned

This sounds like something people usually say of teachers here... that their reward is in heaven.

lol @greenrun, you made me remember those days.

Holy cannoli! I was wondering what you curators had to go through. I suppose I can thank you for helping my posts get some attention. ;) I've actually wanted to get in touch with someone to see if I could possibly help with curating. I'm currently self-employed and have quite a bit of time to kill during the daytime. Anyways, thanks for everything and get some rest!

This was only temporary thankfully, things should be back to normal and less crazy from perhaps tonight. But we are an ever expanding concept so you never know when the services are needed!

Your browser looks like me doing my final year project :)
That is a lot of WORK! Thanks a lot for all the work. It is not unappreciated.

Haha I dread to think and do not envy you =P You are one of us too, thank yourself!

You are right :)

Keep up the good work, bud! But first, rest!

Ohhhh I am! hahah...Not gonna actually let it kill me don't worry

jajaja....I should have posted 20 times during those periods to increase your task. Just because, we love you. You did an amazing job though :)

I created you and I can destroy you. Careful what you wish for =P

But seriously, so relieved it's over now!

Get some rest mate! Everyone really appreciates the hard work that you and the steemstem team does and I don't think anyone takes their votes for granted :)

I have had a great little evening doing NOTHING hah, thanks. The others got right to it so I stepped back and feel much better now =) Glad you appreciate all our efforts!

I'm so glad there are people who actually read posts. I have to visit CERN sometime, I'm sure it's worth it. Btw. There is a contest for a new #curielogo. Take a look at the submissions. This is the contest. There are so many great designs and I think @curie deserves the the best.
Unfortunately, the comment section is quite confusing. If you just want to take a look at the logos, watch this video I created (Don't let the thumbnail put you off):

Hm interesting. There's quite a few I like in there, though most seem quite... 90's

Yeah, and some of them can hurt your eyes. But I think curie will choose one of the good ones.
