An artist must be starving, and other social myths:)

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

Being an artist I already collected in my "magic box" a lot of social myths related to us. Here's a half-joking post, but every joke has a part of truth. In this case - a HUGE part. So:

Myth 1: An artist must be starving

Wow! To tell the truth - a starving, dying from tuberculosis on the attic artist is a flashback from the beginning of the 20th century. There it could be truth. Most artists either had a breathtaking career (like Pablo Picasso), or were.. Well, really starving. In all other centuries they were mostly healthy and wealthy, first working for temples, then for church, and then for the palace. Guess who paid most:)

Myth 2: All artists are marginals

Not true again. There's a great myth surrounding this "fact". Of course, a lot of artists of the past drank a lot, took drugs ect., but in the world we live now... Well, being a commercial artist means that you work, You have terms and conditions of your work. And "excuse me, I was drinking in search of inspiration and accidentally fell of the stairs and broke my arm" in not an excuse.

Myth 3: An artist must work for free

Do you ask your hairdresser to make a free haircut? A baker for a free bread? A lawyer for free consultation? Now what's wrong with artists? Artists don't enjoy starving (see paragraph one).

Myth 4: Only sad emotions lead to art creation

Here I want to break the myth with awesome comics by one of my favorite strips creators Sarah Andersen:

Myth 5: Artists need inspiration to create

Also not true. It's awesome when we have one, but the truth is that sometimes you have to draw even with no inspiration. Cause your client waits for the work to be done. Just work, like any other (sorry for ruining divine image:)

Don't forget to hug your friend artist today:)

Thank you for voting and commenting:)

you have a good upvote power :P :P show some to me xD :P

there is no other artist closer xD :P

I love the comic! Thanks for sharing this view about artists. I think many artists would argue that they still fit many of the stereotypes. However, that's likely because they're just starting out and haven't found their niche yet :)

Perhaps so:) Especially about inspiration, that's what I always hear from the beginners

My second thought after I decided to be a writer (as a pre-teen) was "I guess I'll have to become an alcoholic." At the time, I believed all of the misconceptions you listed above. Fortunately, I'm now older and wiser and know that they aren't (always) true.

Ha-ha, really laughed about your comment:) Imagined you thinking this deep thought:)

I like how Shane Black mentions that it made a difference when he stopped consuming alcohol. Let's hope that more pre-teens would not think that alcohol dependency is the route for creative thought!

thx 👍👍👍

This is so true

Haven't encountered any of those ones for a while XD Though I have in the past had people trying to weasel free work by whining about how "it'll be great for exposure!" I only give away free work when I really like someone! XD

As for starving well in my case I probably would be as I wouldn't make enough money from art by itself, I have completely the wrong personality type to be promoting and advertising and I help people entirely too much XP

Most of the issues I get is still people thinking that the computer does it all for me, even in this day and age XD

So true! Especially about "computer does it all for me". Damn, sometimes when I heard it from closest people (like mother-in-law, for example), I even brought them to my home, gave them stylus and opened an empty canvas in Photoshop. And settled the brush I usually use for sketching. And said "Go on, make the computer to do everything instead of you":)

lol
It's true, there are many many myths about the artists :D My "favorite" is "Only sad emotions lead to art creation", but I like also that they have to work for free :P

I forgot to add "special for digital artists" - Computer does everything instead of an artist:)

So greatly fixed Inber ! ^_^ I know another myth : artists have no sense of reality I think we have the sense of all realities possible, in the contrary... ;-)

You're right! I totally agree:) "M reality is just different";)
