Shallow Thoughts

My company did a full day of training followed by a team building event racing go-karts. Word to the wise. . . if you're going to drive a real go-kart, that means wearing a real helmet, which means you should remember to wear your contact lenses. This is not a good look:

Deep Thoughts

A couple notes on etiquette during competitive team building events:

  • Don't take the competition too seriously, it doesn't matter who wins
  • Don't take yourself too seriously, you won't prove/disprove anything by winning or losing
  • Above ALL else, make no one leaves with a serious injury

Remember, it's called TEAM BUILDING. . . if your hyper-competitiveness is coming out in that setting, then it's time to look for a more competitive hobby to scratch that itch. You really don't want to be that guy.

Usually in the game there must be a win and lose, the advantage of your building team is togetherness...

At my old company we did an escape room as team building...two people got fired after ;) - they should have read your tips!

Yeah, I can imagine an escape room going horribly wrong. I've seen stress fractures, heated arguments, and bruised egos, but I have yet to see anyone get fired. . . plenty of time left in my career for that :)

I love how you split it into shallow and then deep thoughts. True, that isn't the best look haha but then who really cares so much at a company team building exercise?

It must be frustrating for every "that guy" out there because it must be rare to find someone with the same level of enthusiasm as them about winning and defeating others. But of course, we gotta keep our emotions aside especially when the purpose of the activity is anything but winning.

Thanks, I've enjoyed experimenting with the format - I've got a lot of different things going through my head on a given day, so it's nice to break it into the mundane details of life and some (hopefully) higher-level insight.

I've known quite a few of "that guy" and always feel a bit embarrassed on their behalf when things get out of hand. If only they had a little perspective.

Don't take the competition too seriously, it doesn't matter who wins.

We had some problems with several colleagues when the only goal for them was "to beat everybody and win!". Now we just do not invite them to such events :)

Yup. . . it's basically a short-game/long-game scenario. If people realized that they could lose a race but win a career-long (or life-long friendship), they would approach the game very differently.

Tips that lie in joining a forum, too effective to learn it.
Nice
