Don't take the competition too seriously, it doesn't matter who wins.
We had some problems with several colleagues when the only goal for them was "to beat everybody and win!". Now we just do not invite them to such events :)

Yup. . . it's basically a short-game/long-game scenario. If people realized that they could lose a race but win a career-long (or life-long friendship), they would approach the game very differently.
