DIY corner - results of trying my hand at making a coffee table

Hi Steemers! I love the occasional DIY, in the past i have made my own videoprojector, i have built a fancy cat-house, my own working desk and various other stuff.

I have limited space currently and i don't own a myriad of tools, so all this is a challenge to me. But nothing beats the feeling of building something with your own hands and that object turning out good.

I cannot say all these items have turned out so perfect, some of them have lots of shortcomings, but i still love them.

So i want to show you the finalized coffee-table that I built some years back.

Unfortunately i don't have any pictures of the building process, which i hope to remedy in some of my future posts - i am thinking about DIY-ing a platform bed sometime in the future and some other stuff.

I love the scratched and somewhat aged look of this table. Basically all i needed for this one was one long wooden beam, which i sawed into 4 pieces, joined said pieces from below, in the process also covering the hole in the middle from the downside.

Next step was to stain the table 2 times - after each coat you need to quickly wipe the stain off with a rag to get that aged look. If you want it lighter, stain it only once and wipe it off.

The stones for the hole in the middle were bought from our local trinkets store and cost maybe 4-5€, you won't find these kind of rocks on our beaches here. And besides, it turns out for my surprise, it's illegal to pick stones from the beaches for your own gain :D Funny fact.

The legs are made of bamboo. They give an excellent final touch to the table. Here is the only shortcoming of this coffee table, the table is a little bit flimsy because the legs aren't joined to each other. I think bamboo requires more skills and time to work with than i have.

Anyways, i am very satisfied with this table until today and for years to come. I can put cold vodka or beer bottles without coasters on this table, spill drinks, scratch it etc. Every new marks gives it a new life and more personality.

Looking forward to the Steemit DIY tag to get more awesome furniture posts from all you guys. Cheers and good luck!

I really like the aged look of this - and the cut out in the middle holding pebbles - very different and adds to the aged effect.

Thanks, that aged look is what i was aiming for and it worked out better then expected and really simple to do.

The look from your shot never shows it been long you made it...which means you chose your materials right.

The coffee table looks unique...

Wow, nice work. Looks heavy. Did u paint it? Or its the wood's natural color?

It's not painted, it's just stained twice and wiped off immediately. And it's not heavy at all :)
