I agree with you on pretty much all of this; the only parts I would have correction is because the situation was far worse than presented.

The US, under Obama, was making a point to arm and fund "the rebels", which was maintained as a nebulous term to mean those countering Assad. These rebels consisted of a wide range of groups, sometimes competing, but included Alquaeda, Al Nusra, ISIS, and others of various levels of radicalized positions.

I would not be doing justice to get into further details because, even with the best intentions, the issues in the region are really complex and easily confused.

Assad is arguably the least toxic national leader in the region. The MIC wants him gone because of his relationship with Iran and Russia. But if we topple him, Syria will become a festering wound on the globe.
