Of Subjective Truths - The Libyan Example

I want to use the Libyan War example to disprove the notion that credibility from generally accepted public opinions is a criteria for the acceptance of their truths over truths subject to facts, the best criteria which in my opinion describes truth.

During the Arab spring amidst growing dissent from a faction of the people, the UN gave NATO approval to establish a ‘No fly zone’ area and help keep the peace. This quickly shifted to regime change which became the priority of these countries.

According to the champions of the regime change, they were pursuing a “better society for all Libyans where human rights will be respected”. That was their truth, and they manage to pass up Gaddafi as an evil dictator to the rest of the World.

Now Gaddafi certainly was no saint, but as at the time the uprising did begin, Libya was the No 1 most prosperous country in Africa from one of the poorest when he took over. So why will he never be seeing as nothing short of an evil villain – because those who wanted regime change had more credibility in the eyes of international observers.

Well we keep seeing the aftermath of the ousting and wonder how different things may have been if facts had been considered thoroughly rather than opinions based on ‘credibility’.

Sort:

You need to be a tyrant to control some factions. Gadaffi was besties with Tony Blair during the 90's. Its amazing that a change in economic foreign policy can change a view about someone. Look at Saddam. Iraq was definitely a safer place with him around. Cuba has the best healthcare system in the world under Castro. He was evil too apparently!

Some say it would have been better to have kept him in power as at least the region had stability.

Not just stability, reading your article earlier made me research and realize just how prosperous it was

Who knows how prosperous as there must be more stashed away. The 70 or 80 Billion is what is known.

@empress-eremmy
This is a most curious matter... "The most prosperous country"... I heard he built a "Great Man-Made River" to make the desert fertile and other positive things like free schools and universities etc... Yet I have talked to refugees from Libya who said it was horrible to live there and that Gaddafi was a horrible dictator and that this "Great Man-Made River" was like Gaddafis private subway-system... Not really sure what to think...

It all depends what tribe you came from it seems. Libya is not straightforward and if you were a refugee I would suggest you were from the wrong tribe as such. Not everyone was equal under his rule and for the most was terrifying.

I just read on wikipedia that this "Great Man-Made River" was partly damaged by NATO in 2011.

The late Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi described it as the "Eighth Wonder of the World".[4] But in 2011 it was damaged by NATO, due to which Libya is still facing water shortages.

Great Man-Made River
The Great Man-Made River (GMR, النهر الصناعي العظيم) is a network of pipes that supplies water to the Sahara in Libya, from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System fossil aquifer. It is the world's largest irrigation project.According to its website, it is the largest underground network of pipes (2,820 kilometres (1,750 mi)) and aqueducts in the world. It consists of more than 1,300 wells, most more than 500 m deep, and supplies 6,500,000 m3 of fresh water per day to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi, Sirte and elsewhere. It is also the world's largest irrigation project.

howdy empress! yes Libya is an example of a country destroyed for no reason, it was very prosperous and peaceful but someone wanted it destroyed, the U.S. for one but I don't know why.
