That, my friend, is a very good question! To be honest with you, I didn't realize that claim rewards thingy was there yet until you just pointed it out. I hope it's not time sensitive, but I went ahead and clicked it, just to be sure :-)
Rewards weren't transactions before. Since they were previously virtual, this increases transactions. However it improves scalability in other ways, by making it easier to parallelize.
I half expected it to move away from the mouse pointer all the time.

Perhaps it's just intended to reduce transactions on the network by pooling multiple rewards into a single transfer.
