Getting up; if you're young and depressed

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

This will be the first in a series of blogposts in which I will interview people battling depression.

Why i'm starting this blog

Not being able to get out of bed because you feel terrible. Not being able to force yourself to go to school. Not going to your friends' parties or grabbing a beer downtown. Not because you don't want to but because you can't. A devastating grief, which can turn around any minute to a dull emptiness. A monster living inside your head. Yet again, pretending nothing's wrong, however hard it may be.

In what ways do young people deal with their depression or depression symptoms? In Getting up I will attempt to find an answer to this.

I'm a second year student at the School of Journalism, and i've seen depression up close. Not in myself, but in my immediate environment. Depression is an issue that really engages me. The often total lack of understanding, and the thought it's all in your head and will blow over, has affected me. Something that makes me want to fight this delusion. "Just do fun things, you'll be fine". And That's it? Because you're not wearing a clearly visible cast or bandage? No. I've started this blog to create more understanding and openess to young people with depression. The stigma on depression is still way too big.

Through personal stories of young sufferers and discussions with experts, I want to develop myself as a human interest journalist with a great interest in psychology. And hopefully the stigma that rests on depression in adolescents will decrease slightly.

Your own head can be debilitating. Therefore, I think that should we stop the trivialisation of depression.

Getting up is a start.

Getting up 2: Cara (19): "It's just a defect in my brains"

Getting up 3: Glenn(22): "It felt like a defeat to admit I wasn't doing well"

Thank you for the post. Depression is something that people need to know about!

Nice post and good initiative. Depression is a huge problem in today's world. Please also look into Niacin defficiency and the role of this natural supplement in helping with depression and other mental health issues.

I will do some research on that topic.

@kus-knee - Good advice
I would like to add that you cut out the sugar from your diet for 2 weeks, it used to be mandatory that you remove the sugar to rule that out before using other methods to control any type of mental illness, too bad big pharma changed that.

Thank You for sharing I suffered from depression when I was younger and I look forward to read your series!

I post the next 2 parts of the series, thanks for your kind words

I've suffered with Depression for most of my adult life. The hardest thing to do is get up and be active but it's probably better then medication for mild cases.
