Do you find you’re Repeating yourself?!

in #blog6 years ago

Are the words in your sub-title, the same words as the title headlines? Is this helpful to those who are trying to get some idea of what’s essentially in your blog’s content?

Let me start with a laughable fact:

Our youngest daughter, said the other day, to her eldest sister,” Do you know, I sound like our mother!  I find myself repeating myself. And I even get my children’s names all mixed up!” Well when I heard that, I burst out laughing. I just couldn’t stop laughing. Shuddering with laughter, till the tears flowed!

You may not think this is funny like I did. But if you’ve been a mother with more than one child, you’ll understand and appreciate why it is so funny. You’re happy to know at last your children have begun to realize what it means to be a mother.

You see, when you’re a child, you wonder why adults repeat themselves? You think the old dears tend to be forever bossy and nag endlessly. Ha-ha! Blar-blar! So What! Not all that old hat again!

The point is:

They’ve heard it all before. And no one clicks on your post because the title was repeated in the sub-title.

  • To our prospect readers, it shows the writer hasn’t thoughtfully prepared the blog. Didn’t understand that the subtitle is there to identify, inform and encourage readers to click and read the blog.
  • It also gives you impression that the blog is bound to be bland and uninteresting. So people don’t expect much and move on. (Just like when mother repeated herself! He he!)

Take note of newspaper & magazine headlines:

Journalists have to be very creative when they write for newspapers, otherwise they are fired. Their headlines have to be very `catchy’ to insure the paper sells well.

And if we are wise, we can` take a leaf out of their book’.

So what are newspapers like?

  1. First of all, newspaper headlines are short and snappy, on the street placards or on the front page of the paper.
  2. The wording is cleverly direct, yet mystifying enough, so you want to buy the newspaper straight away to find out what’s the latest news is all about.
  3. And in the actual paper, you’ll find the first paragraph has a brief on the story, before continuing with the full detailed story.

And what Magazines are like:

  1. And if you look at magazines, you’ll see on the cover, preliminary sub-titles stimulating you to buy the magazine.
  2. And then once inside the mag, you’ll find the article also has a sub-title or first paragraph that introduces you to the article’s content.

Conclusion:  Entice people to read your blogs.

  1. Your headlines are there to grab people.
  2. And the sub-title is to encourage people.
  3. And the first paragraph is a brief discussion or dialog that leads people into, what’s going to be in the contents.
  4. And in the contents, don’t disappoint them. Give them more than what they expected. Make it exciting and thrilling to read (hear).

Years ago someone brought this to my attention:

He said, “Tell a story like a newspaper. Give us headlines first. Don’t go straight into your long-boring drawn-out details of the story of what actually happened. First give us some idea of what the story will be about, so we can then understand and follow the gist of it without any trouble.”

I’ve never forgotten that. Such wise words!

But that’s not all:

The headlines and sub-headings need to be dramatic and dynamic to make them `clickable’.

They can be sensible, way-out, funny, corny, whatever. But they must be eye catching and mind bending.

Sort:

I like your theme today. Many bloggers underestimate the importance of headlines. The wrong title indicates to everyone that the author was not prepared and is not interested in the quality of his content.
It is the headlines in blogs that should attract people to read the message. The title is like a beautiful cover and the title of the book. When people see a beautiful book with an interesting name, they want to buy it. Even in newspapers, many articles have "tempting" headlines. That is, the reader sees a loud title and he has a great desire to read the article.
The basic task of headings is to interest the reader.

“Tell a story like a newspaper. Give us headlines first. Don’t go straight into your long-boring drawn-out details of the story of what actually happened. First give us some idea of what the story will be about, so we can then understand and follow the gist of it without any trouble.”

Indeed these are very wise words. I will remember them.
Thank you, related topic

Only a parent can understand this and I think mother can understand it more than the father, also the editors have to be creative, the headline should attract the readers and in the content they should not disappoint the reader. Keep sharing such posts, thankyou

Only thing i know about Newspapers is mostly are marketing one' but few are really good. They would surely improve your intellect.. But alas more are just nightmares

You've explained it beautifully..
To write like a journalist, you need to think like a journalist

It’s important that coworkers know the place we stand and that we're consistent. Does that suggest they will usually understand and comply with our guidance? No, however if we’re clear and we’re repeating ourself—verbally and in writing—the onus falls on them to meet their obligations and our expectations.

As a leader, do we get bored repeating our self over and over again? If so, we would possibly be involved to analyze that the great managers will follow-up any verbal conversation up in writing . Some repetition, in other words, helps make certain that coworkers get our message.

Well I can't say anything about being a mother. I have no idea relating to the subject. And obviously journalists have to be precise about their headings, headings must contain only what attracts the readers. It should not be descriptive so that the readers read only the headings. That means there is no point of reading the article. And the sub heading must be written in such a way that they give an idea what the article is all about and nothing more and nothing less. Heading must also be catchy so that readers are attracted to it.

The purpose of sub-titles is to provide some idea what the blog maybe about. The need is to encourage, not give everything away in the title and sub-title. A suggestion of what it may be. The point is to create an incentive to click on the title.

lol what a joke, the children do joke like this and are innocents...
the newspapers and megazines are one of the most most traditional ways to know about what's going on in world, news papers are very informative but the drawbacks of newspaper is that they don't describe fully one peticular content as they have to cover all such things happening, while as the megazines describe one article or content fully, and the one thing that they stimulate us to buy it is by having erotic cover pictures...
yes hyperlinks are must in front page of newspaper, they take us directly to the page by simply clicking on the link...

I was just about thinking how to make my writings effective and attractive and then I find this. Perfect timing...
Thanks for sharing this.
It is really helpful

Hm, I agree that a headline needs to be enticing and clickable, but I think that nowadays this is taken to an extreme. Many people capitalize their entire heading and add tons of exclamation or question marks. For many years this has been the most effective clickbaiting strategy. This is annoying.

To your point with the newspaper I have to add that from my perspective they lure either with propagandic headings or the headings has not really to do with the content. Of course there are many exceptions.

I don't mean YOUR articles! 😃
