Blockchain technology is of course in the peak of its hype as of Gartner's 2016 below, and is reaching the “Peak of inflated expectations”
Developers are producing applications at the speed of light and here are some of the industries they are working on and in which blockchain can result in a breakthrough:

9- Payments systems industry

12- Intelectual property
13- Online Identity
14- Ownership records

These are only the ones in which blockchain technology is immediately applicable but future will reserve many surprises. In particular by combining machine learning and blockchain there should be many more applications of what you have seen now.

I know predicting the future is tough business but I find it interesting that Gartner has VR on the slope while AR is at the trough. The placement of these two isnt what got my attention so much as the relationship to blockchain.
Keep this in mind. FB bought Oculus in 2013, Bitcoin i.e. the blockchain was out 4 years before that. To me, the blockchain is further along than VR.
Yeap, blockchain is one of the six technologies world economic forum has indicated as the one that will have the biggest impact on our societies in the next 10 years
