Kind Ads - A Decentralised Advertising Platform
When I was a small kid in the 70's, cutting out the adverts while making a mix tape from the radio was state of the art technology and there was only one commercial channel on TV. Newspaper adverts and billboards were big business and computer games were at the very exciting TV tennis console stage. Naturally we were fascinated by Space Invaders and PacMan but it was to be a while until the internet got going. Suffice to say Advertising was still in analogue mode, pretty wide spectrum and only available in certain places at certain times.
Fast Forward 20 Years
It's now 1996 and I'm studying for my Post Grad in Multimedia Technology at the University of Liverpool. Mostly art and design graduates, we are all learning about HTML & Flash and Banner Ads are about to become the most amazing invention (and moneyspinner) the burgeoning internet has seen. Ad Banners became so sophisticated, I remember a friend of mine saying that a client had $150,000 budget for a single banner and they were organising a pop video style shoot for it ?? Fast forward a bit later on and the same friend asked our company shroomstudio to produce a banner ad for their client, a Banner Ad for Kelloggs which they liked so much, that they printed 1,000,000 packets with it. see below
Ads became a Nightmare
Ad blockers became my saviour. Browsers like Firefox, with their default do not track setting became a lifeline while drowning in a sea of inapppropriate, spam advertising, which honestly felt like the equivalent of cluster bombing. I'm not sure the client is ever getting true value for money. If you even so much as look at a garden shed, Facebook will immediately start haunting you with adverts for all manner of garden sheds, patios, ponds and fencing to the point of exasperation ! If you are a major advertiser you may have some clout with the agency who buys your ad space, but for the majority, SME's and companies who may not be au fait with the advances of modern internet technology, they are likely to have no other option than to join an ad network where a middleman makes fat fees, the client has little or no control over what is advertised and they may even expose their visitors to malware, tracking cookies and other phishing devices. Devastating to the business and incredibly annoying to the user. All business relationships are based on mutual trust and therein lies a challenge.
There has to be a better Way ?
There is. Of course, Kind Ads which does what it says on the tin. "An advertising platform that serves user-friendly ads without taking any middleman fees." As you can see from the diagram below the flow of tokens is balanced between publishers, users and advertisers, with users opting in or out of ad delivery (and rewards).

That could be argued that it's the last thing we need in a world of endless consumption, but I beg to differ. We all need stuff, just the right kind for our own needs and we love good advertising as content when it's well thought out and clever. I'm going to take a look. We need more and more alternatives. Too often people don't try to improve upon what's out there, and we get left with limited options. I'm not a fan of most ad platforms; hope this one will be what the internet needs!!!
