Things with upvotes have changed after the last hard fork. Now your voting power goes down 2% with every upvote that you make. And it takes time to build it up again. So people are more cautious now ...

I think a good start and #introduceyourself post with a verification picture, like "steemit" written on a paper etc so that people can get to know you start to connect to you. No no doubt you will enjoy steemit
