Cherie Aimée - Presentation at Decentralized 2018 - Humanizing the Blockchain

in #blockchain6 years ago

A few weeks back I wrote that an event is considered successful when the attendee's goals are accomplished, when new beginnings mark its ending and when the next one is highly anticipated!1

Apart from all the above reasons, for an event that aims to bring like-minded together and to educate the world about new technologies, it is important to share it with the world!

So, an event is considered successful when through it, the attendees (but also the world) are able to be enlightened with the speakers' views and shared values.

Women in Tech

We could discuss a lot about Women in Technology, I will quote a phrase that perhaps says it all.

From Ada Lovelace to Anita Borg, the history of STEM is a history of women. Yet the historical narrative predominantly focuses on men. When the modern news cycle turns its attention to women, more often than not, it’s to note the paucity of females in the increasingly vital fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 2

Women in the Blockchain

I hope it would be different, but to be absolutely honest with you, the only women that I know who understand blockchain (or at least use it in any form) are the ones I have met through steemit (initially) and digitally, as well as through my attending the free course3 about Digital Currencies held at the University of Nicosia.

I really hope to be able to see more Women influencing the evolution of technologies, I hope that the more feminine way of perceptive is able to change how we feel about innovation and how we react to it.

Apologies for the too long prologue.. Without any further due, allow me to introduce you Mrs Cherie Aimée! An Awarded Female Leader of the Year, one of the most Influential Women in Blockchain and a .. Death Survivor, who has had the strength to endure, to stay alive and to share her inspiration, while empowering people and bringing more value to the world.

Let us be empowered!

About the presentation of Mrs Aimée at the Decentralized 2018

What Cherie Aimée wanted to remind to us was to open our minds and understand what is the most important thing that can lead the blockchain technology to the adoption from the public.

What we very often hear is about the immutable, trustless technology that blockchain represents. However, some very interesting questions arise.

  • Should we care about the Team behind the technology?
  • Why should we care about the Team, since the tech per se, does not need to be trusted, does not require trust to be functional?

Values such as integrity, ethics, trust should be included in any business and especially in such a new space like the Blockchain.

I would like to share the quote that Cherie has included in her motivating speech.

There is one thing that is common to every individual, relationship, team, family, organization, nation, economy and civilization throughout the world - one thing which, if removed, will destroy the most powerful government, the most successful business, the most thriving economy, the most influential leadership, the greatest friendship, the strongest character, the deepest love.
Stephen M. R. Covey "The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything"

Current State of Blockchain Technology

As Cherie states, at the moment there are little use cases of blockchain technology, there is a significant lack of understanding of the technology and of ways to integrate it in existing systems. There is a lack of communication between the community and the systems and at times, a lack of innovative culture, a culture that would be capable of empowering people to understand that they are part of something bigger.

Author's remark: Which reminds me the saying by famous Greek Philosopher Aristotle "Aristotle — 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.'"

What it would take for Mass Adoption

Time will be necessary for the creation of regulations and for the existence of more use cases and more completed developments. All users and actors should have a good understanding about the underlying technology and a full transparency should be accomplished, for a viable use of the technology. For all.

Blockchain technology sounds interesting, fun and innovating but at the end it all comes down to ..

  • How well do we understand the technology
  • How well do we understand the users' needs, fears, aspirations
  • Which problems will it solve, which questions will it answer

If we want blockchain to get to mass adoption, what are we going to do to address their biggest fear, which is the loss of control? It's got to be by education, and education to build trust.
Cherie Aimée

This is the core suggestion and value of this speech. By establishing Trust, we will be able to humanize the blockchain, making it a more friendly, a more familiar, a more understandable and relatable technology.

You make me proud, here and on Twitter. You see clearly a gap and you're doing your best to fill it. I will watch that video, when I get home from babysitting my granddaughter. The world she inherits will be more open to her than it was to me, thanks to efforts like yours.

Thank you so much for your kind words! 💙
I feel that sharing is very important for moving forward, for changing to a better world..

working towards adoption. Great to have more women involved in blockchain.

There is perhaps 1 person in a hundred who knows how cell phones work. But there are 99 out of a hundred people using/abusing them!

True. And this will never change till we do : )
