DAGs - Path Towards Mass Adoption

Source

Three months ago, I wrote this article:

"(IJCH) Everything Mainstream - The Phases of the "Disruption to Mass Adoption" Process"

Source

Article link:

https://steemit.com/technology/@jaichai/ijch-everything-mainstream-the-phases-of-the-disruption-to-mass-adoption-process?sort=new

In the article, I describe my model of the "Disruption to Mass Adoption" Process. It is composed of the following 6 Phases:

  • Phase 1 "Birth of a New Idea"

  • Phase 2 "Introduction to the Public"

  • Phase 3 "Growth"

  • Phase 4 "We've Arrived"

  • Phase 5 "Kill it while it's Young"

  • Phase 6 "Mass Adoption"

I believe that DAG based cryptocurrencies and platforms are currently in the late Phase 4 to early Phase 5 stages.

This article discusses four reasons why DAGs will overtake traditional blockchains and become the de facto consensus mechanism for both private and public distributed ledgers.

But before we can discuss the advantages of the DAG, it's important to have a basic understanding of what a DAG is and how it works.

So, for those new to DAGs, here's a quick, short hyper-lesson...

What is a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)? - The Shortest Tutorial Ever!

Source

A DAG and a Blockchain do exactly the same thing; that is, they are both mechanisms for reaching consensus within a network.

Source

However, a DAG's structure and consensus method are very different than that of a traditional blockchain.

Source

Miners verify each transaction on a blockchain.

In a DAG network, the users themselves are the ones who verify those transactions; meaning: "Good Bye Miners!".

How does this happen?

When a user makes a transaction, in order for the transaction to go through, he needs to verify two other transactions first.

Source

This is a seamless, under the hood process requiring no manual tinkering by the user.

The DAG has a branching out structure, while the Blockchain has a tree-like shape.

Source

Consequently, blockchains have to do things in a serial fashion; marching on one by one.

Source

Contrastingly, a DAG does things differently, in a parallel way, where a group of tasks can be done at the same time.

Source

That's it!

Congratulations!

You've just passed "DAG 101: An Overview". Now you know more about the DAG than 99% of the world's population!

Four Reasons Why DAGs will supplant Blockchains

Source

1. Speed - Transactions Per Second (tps)

Source

Currently, Bitcoin and Ethereum barely accomplish 7-12 tps (in the most optimum conditions).

Because of their structure and consensus mechanism, DAG based currencies routinely achieve tps in the hundred thousands per second range!

For example, a DAG based crypto called IOTA can perform 500,000 tps!

2. Scalability

Source

Traditional blockchain architecture is inherently weak at scaling up to the demands of current workloads - much less the onslaught of users when mass adoption occurs!

Basically, in regards to scalability, DAG networks function like a torrent network, the more users, the more robust and responsive it becomes.

In other words, the more people/machines using the DAG network, the more efficient and quicker it becomes!

3. No Miners, No Fees

Source

Say good bye to miners and their mining fees.

About the only costs a user has in a DAG network incurs is the minuscule, seconds long verification of two transactions before his transaction is processed.

4. Drastically Less Electricity Needed

Source

The electricity consumed by Bitcoin Mining exceeds that of many small countries!

DAG based cryptos and platforms' electricity requirements are microscopic compared to traditional blockchains.

And for those who are concerned about the Earth's welfare, the giant carbon footprint of traditional blockchains is an abomination!

Conclusion

Source

The traditional blockchain will not be able to handle the forthcoming demands of the Internet of Things (IoT).

The DAG is the only structure (thus far) that has the speed, scalability, low cost, and low energy requirements needed for the billions of future Iot Devices and their accompanying transaction loads.

IMHO, DAGs will be the de facto structure for the backbone of the IoT.

"My mind was a terrible thing to waste..." - JaiChai

I'm impressed by how simply you explained it so that not only did I understand, but I also started asking myself questions.

I was wondering, will existing crypto-currencies be able to transfer to DAG? If yes, would a platform like this one, and if yes, will it be able to take with it all the info/data already stored here?

If retaining info/data is desired, mostly likely a crypto or platform will have to do a hard fork.

From the user side, it's much easier to just remove assets and switch to another coin.

My first thought when I read the title was, "Oh, sure, so here is another 'Wanna-be' competitor for the Blocjchain."

I decided to read it anyway and finished with a different thought: the Blockchain is so outmoded it doesn't have a chance in any kind of volume/speed environment with DAG available.

The other thought was to never pass up any kind of post by @jaiChai because I am going to learn something when I read it!

I really appreciate your generous praise.

I'm a huge fan of Hashgraph. Thank you for introducing me to the project and Leemon Baird who I consider to be the greatest mind in the cryptophere.

I don't have much faith in IOTA. They have hadtoo many screw ups in my eyes. I love NANO and Byteball. I'm especially happy with how much of a foundation that has been laid by Byteball for great things to be built on top of it. But the Tx takes way too much time to confirm. It's still not ready for day to day payments which Dash, PIVX and even BCh is very well equipped to handle. SmarCash is also very underrated project.

Great explanation! I was most familiar with IOTA from the examples that you gave, but I have recently come into other ones. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all pans out, it might be the VHS vs Betamax all over again!

Excellent analogy! (I'll give you props for the first three times I use it, ok?) LOL!

Always cool when you visit.

I actually understood that. Whoohooo.... Thank you @jaichai... :)

Cool. I was hoping I explained it good enough.
