Decentralizing the Internet With Cardstack

Cardstack is a revolutionary new blockchain framework which gives people the tools that they need to interact on a decentralized internet.

Today's digital superpowers force us to use silos to get access to the internet. All of our bandwidth goes through central servers which makes it easier for the the controllers to monitor, censor and restrict how we use the internet. Bitcoin brought blockchain to the world and paved the way for new ways to use blockchains, such as a decentralized internet.

With Cardstack, users are able to integrate features from different dApps in ways that would not have been possible with a centralized internet. The system gives end-users the ability to create new workflows by combining different layers from the internet without having to use several different utility tokens or cloud storage solutions.

These solutions are made possible by the Cardstack Framework, a software developers kit that is used to build dApps. With this SDK, designers can use small 'cards' of information which can be manipulated in a number of ways because each card acts independently. The ecosystem is run by smart contracts which are powered by Cardstack tokens (CARD). The token is also used to sustain a marketplace where developers are rewarded for their contributions to the blockchain ecosystem.

Whenever a user spends CARD, a smart contract between the user and the app is created. The tokens are then stored in a reward pool and then distributed as rewards to the apps creators based on the governance model that the community has decided on.

CARD users are able to mine the cryptocurrency in order to earn fees and secure the network. CARD's mining process is different from other mining processes because rather than just solving unnecessarily hard math problems, CARD miners work on sifting out spam and figuring out who should get paid what.

Consensus is reached via a protocol known as Tally. On-chain consensus is a burden to most blockchains due to lengthy wait times therefore Tally uses off-chain validations called proof-of-usage before recording only the final result on the blockchain. This reduces the amount of data stored on the blockchain which dramatically reduces the strain on the Ethereum blockchain.
With this kind of mining, Tally is able to run the same complex computations run by supercomputers on large networks. Miners can use GPUs to secure the Cardstack ecosystem which is convenient because they are already available.

The prime benefits for users to use Cardstack are:

  • The ability to get started with crypto or fiat,
  • Creating unique workflows using app combinations found within the Cardstack Hub.
  • Restricting access to your data or sending it wherever you want with ease,
  • Bringing together different dApps,
  • Being able to use one token as a currency in all the dApps.

Developers will also benefit from Cardstack features such as:

Keeping developments 100% open source,

  • A powerful software developers kit to build functional and inspiring applications,
  • Getting paid by the community-run governance algorithm,
  • A well-stocked library of drop-in functionality.
