I do none of those 4 things you listed, but am still a mediocre blogger here on Steemit. Your intro is correct, there is no answers besides the hustle. Maybe over time that's all you need? I haven't found the answer either, but the most promising I think is to add valuable comments and upvote the content you actually find interesting. That definitely takes a lot of time, where not many are willing to dedicate.

The only way to combat that is to buy steem and power up to get influence.
But apart from that, a person may have to put in the work to break even.
