December, 11th : 📣Bitcoin Futures will be Crypto Market's Black Tuesday !📣

in #blacksunday7 years ago (edited)

In this post I will explain why I think that Bitcoin Futures Trading will bring a huge Bear Market.

The biggest news in derivatives world is the impending launch of Bitcoin futures, first by CBOE, then shortly thereafter by CME.

What are “Futures”?

Futures are financial contracts obligating the buyer to purchase an asset or the seller to sell an asset, such as a physical commodity or a financial instrument, at a predetermined future date and price

Futures contracts detail the quality and quantity of the underlying asset; they are standardized to facilitate trading on a futures exchange.

Some futures contracts may call for physical delivery of the asset, while others are settled in cash

Definition from Investopedia

Why does the market need Bitcoin Futures?

  • Historically, the interest of futures is to own physical assets that would be hard to buy easily.
  • It is also used to make these assets (gold, steel, corn…) more liquid and easy to trade between corporates that need it and investors
  • Bitcoin DOES exhibit some of these symptoms, it is not easy to have and to buy for most people (even if for us it does seem easy)
  • Big spot markets (what we have right now) paved the way for success of futures markets

Why Futures are a threat to Bitcoin and Cryptos?

I am a Crypto HODLer but we have to admit that it is very difficult to justify the stratospheric price and why it rocketed in 2017.

Don’t forget that cryptocurrencies erode the demand for fiat currencies (therefore fiat currencies depreciate vs cryptocurrencies). This is not a good news for Central Banks and Governments:

They will:

  • Find some way to restrict their use
  • Introduce their own crypto-fiat
  • Partner with the Banking system to artificially make Bitcoin go back to >$5000 to scare crypto-investors and general public

Shorting (betting on the fall in price of an asset) is difficult with Bitcoin because people are overly optimistic and it is costly via Exchanges.

In the Financial Academic Literature:

”Costly shorting can allow an asset's price to remain excessively high for an extended period.”

This could be one thing that supports Bitcoin's current price.

Futures will make it easier to short Bitcoin:

"The futures reduce the frictions of going short more than they do of going long, so it's probably net bearish," said Craig Pirrong, a business professor at the University of Houston. "Having this instrument that makes it easier to short might keep the bitcoin price a little closer to reality."

My friends, I hope that I am wrong but I think this is what will happen.

Different signs show that we are at the end of the "bubble":

  • Huge gains during the last week (before a bubble burst it rallyes even more strongly)
  • Mass market is definitely invested in Bitcoin (my parents know about it, a taxi asked me to buy some, I played pokers with strangers talking about crypto investments...)
  • It has become the target of the government that are just waiting to burst it open

Please remember this is my personal opinion and not a financial/investment advice. You need to do your own research to make your own decision. Investing in cryptocurrencies can lead to financial losses.

Agreed! I really don't understand why people are rallying to purchase BTC on news of BTC futures. What's important to note is that bitcoin futures add no real demand, for BTC. The futures market gateway is not a glidepath for institutional investors to buy bitcoin (thus driving up demand), but speculate in a derivative which does not impact BTC demand.

It's just a way for institutional investors to get some exposure in a more conventional and regulated market space... and as you said, this is a huge problem, with futures making shorting much easier. I'm strongly considering on deleveraging my position in crypto soon... but at the same time... this is crypto and everything could go parabolic as a result.

Thank you for the comment @orangesphere.
I do think it is overall what could make this bubble explode but as you stated, we never know with Cryptos...
Take care!

I'm glad that you've chosen to look at the potential downsides of an event that most list are raving about with their usual optimism. I think it's only a matter of time before the price eventually gets a reality check and collapses, which will be supported by the new ease of going short on BTC

Thank you for your comment, I tend to be rational and it has been a tough time for me lately :D

I really agree. Peoplee see "lambo party" and "big money bro" but crypto-market is at a very crytical point.

Considering that as bitcoin grows we are observing in last days

  1. increasing volatility
  2. higher fees (fees are calculated in BTC, so if btc goes to the moon fees grow really a lot)
I believe that using bitcoin as money will continue to became harder day by day.
So, by a fundamental point of view, this rally is self-destructive for bitcoin and cannot be sustained.

The future will be negotiated on a regulated and opern market and probably CME volumes will be really better than Exchange volumes. So, in the market, people will psicologically be influenced more by future than by realt BTC. This is normal for every real asset that has a negotiated future. Wen you open television and they talk about oil price, they don't say "oil at the saudi oil camp is...." but they say "future's prices are...". So with CME futures some big market shocks can be trasmitted to Bitcoin.

What will be banks-Future relation?

They will easily be able to short bitcoin shorting the future. This will greatly affect the BTC market, because on CME will be moved really huge volumes. Not bilions or milions, trilions of daily volume. This is the enormous liquidity that is moved with CME, and this is what will enter in BTC future market.
CME futures will be dominated by trading volumes of great investors and bank, also with hyper-tecnologic methods like High Frequency Trading (you can find some valuable info at https://www.investopedia.com/terms/h/high-frequency-trading.asp), as every traditional financiary market. We will see great games, includind probably flash crashes on future.

So, pay a lot of attention. Surprises are really, really possible.

Amen ! The Wolf is entering the CryptoMarket.
Play Time is over...

If I would be an investment bank I would pump bitcoin mostly with the money of my customers to a bubble.
market cap: $ 200 billions
nearly $ 150 billions of them are sleeping
with $ 10 billions you can move the price in what ever direction you want it to move. This is some kind of small change for the big players.
The more the price rises the more easy it will be to get more money from your customers who wants to invest and earn a lot of money.

Then you can start to buy short positions with your own money. After the crash the money of the customers is your own. Maybe investing it in coins for longterm, when everybody else think the game is over.

Only some thoughts but keep calm I am not an investment bank.

I am sure the fiat financial system is going to retaliate but don't know how. It's going to be the battle of Systems(fiat vs crypto), with fiat being long established and crypto with momentum.

Bitcoin-High-Volatility.jpg

There sure is a ton going on today in the market, BTC is getting murdered.. LtC did great as the rats jumped the BTC ship to store wealth there.. Should be a great time for trading ahead.. The futures coming in, panic, blood in the streets... lol.. High volatility ahead.

This will certainly add an entirely new dimension to things.. I see a ton of action that is going to shake things up today....and through the rest of the week..

The pain is going to get to great for those that bought late to stand and they will sell at the wrong time and back into the buyers who see the turn. Honestly I'm full Fiat at the moment, save intraday trading.. but its going to be a ride..

I think so too and have taken profits on Bitcoin.

It was a great investment but I don't trust it an inch - the zionist crypto trojan

Now waiting to see if other cryptos move up in its place.

Super. Pourrais-tu le sortir en Français ?
Je suis long mais y a peut être un coup à jouer dessus.
Je vais regarder les api de kraken pour me passer du site.

Je vais essayer mais je suis un peu full ce weekend.
Faites attention à vous...

Take heart, little lemon.

Peoples made massive gains in tech companies in the mid to late 90s. And they traded with toxic USD and toxic Wall Street stocks. If it can be done back then, I think it can be done again, even more so with crypto. Devs will find a way!

Also, decentralized exchanges are arising. ☺

Yup, But don't forget that during the tech bubble, you got screwed in 2000 even if companies have recovered after to become the biggest ones today.
I feel we are at the top of the Hype right now, and I would like to buy when nobody will believe in cryptos anymore :D.

Makes good sense - - - :)

I am thinking about this for days and at the and really dont know to be bearish or bullish... I hate not having clear crypto mind...
