White Belt Curriculum - Knee on Belly Escapes

Long weekend is done.......time to hit the mats! As a review, this is a serial look at the standard curriculum taught at our academy for the white-belts to leverage towards a strong and balanced game. You can hit my blog and pick out the other lessons any time and here is a quick video introducing the club and the owner/head instructor/BJJ black Belt Ryan.

Today, we follow on from our last lesson and get into some escapes from the Knee On Belly shown in the last lesson. Whether your opponent is light and agile, or a crushing monster, there is an escape for that and it is good to have a couple ready for any situation.

Personal Take Aways/details:

  • Keep that elbow tucked for sure, Ryan will catch you every time.
*ALWAYS answer OSS when the instructor asks if you wanna see it one more time.
  • Married guys may not need to drop to the side on the last one but I would suggest it anyway.

Any questions/comments or funny Knee on Belly experiences that don't involve flatulence? ;) Knowing Ryan's teaching skill and style, any techniques you would like him to go through after we are through with the white belt curriculum?

Does the training there solely focus on groundwork? Haven't seen any standup in the video so I'm wondering.

Ah yes! The head instructor is really big on the concept that getting it to the ground is essential for any grappling success. In all advanced classes, we start rolls from our feet and one week a month we train nogi which is all from standing. Also, if you check back in my blog you will see posts on the monthly judo seminar as well.

I will pick some stand-up centered classes perhaps as a break in the curriculum or afterwards.

How does your academy handle stand-up?
