But miners are expensive, and often involve risks such as burning down your chip and completely losing your investment.

It really depends how you look at it. We never know how much your valuable Bitcoin are going to be worth, what you're saying basically is a calculation of how long it takes you to recoupe on your initial investment, totally ignoring the fact that your harness could be worth much more in the near future.

At $ 67.30 per day you'll make back your $700 in just over 10 days. My friend mines with Genesis and he said it would take him months to break even. What is the difference here?
Also, I've thought about getting a hardware miner because I have free electricity in my apartment. That could make the difference in profitability.
