A Tesla to mine cryptocurrencies?
After samsung rigs made up of 40 galaxy S you thought to have seen everything? Do not underestimate the fertile imagination of miners, and those who own Tesla. The Tesla Inc. is a revolutionary luxury electric car company that was assembled by Elon Musk (who recently denied being Satoshi Nakamoto). One of his users used the vehicle ... to undermine cryptocurrencies!
From joke to reality
The idea starts with a joke posted on facebook group "Tesla Owner Worldwide". A joking user suggests that the free electricity from Tesla's "superchargers" could be diverted to undermine cryptocurrencies. The superchargers are the terminals installed by Tesla throughout the world that allow the cars of the brand to be recharged. A member took this thought seriously and built a rig in the trunk of his vehicle:
In the photo the rig is incomplete. Note 4 motherboards, 4 power supplies and the necessary to connect 4 × 4 graphics cards, which are missing.
Objective: amortize its investment
The Teslas are top of the range vehicles particularly powerful. To buy model S of the range, you will have to pay at least 90 000 €. Thus, mining could perhaps be a solution to amortize its investment. But what about electricity consumption? This problem is not one for those who bought their car before January 2017 because they are part of a program providing them with free and unlimited electricity for their Tesla. Those who bought after January receive "only" 400 kW of free electricity per year.
The system shown above would consume 2,800 W / h if the 16 missing GPUs were added. Nothing compared to the electric power that must ask for a vehicle as powerful as a Tesla? Well think again, the energy consumed by this rig for 1 day and a half is the equivalent of 7 days of consumption! Not sure therefore it is profitable, especially if with electricity, you add the wear generated by the overexploitation of the electrical system.
A profitable idea?
The displayed facility could be able to mine 0.05 ethers per day or 1.5 eth per month. At the current price of the ether this represents a gain of about $ 675 a month. Good news is approximately the monthly rent a Tesla Model S. The hack would be profitable for those enjoying free electricity.
However, do not rely on this DIY to benefit from a discounted Tesla, see free. The rigs emit so much heat that their continued use seems difficult, if not impossible, in such a confined environment, unless the air conditioning is turned on, increasing even more the power consumption. In addition, the rigs are known for their instability, even when they are quietly deposited on the ground. Not that an environment as unstable as a vehicle being driven allows a rig to run smoothly.
