Ledger Nano S Review - A Bitcoin, Ethereum and Altcoin Cryptocurrency Hardware Wallet
Ledgerwallet the company behind ''Ledger Nano S'' Cryptocurrency Wallet have released two other Hardware wallets in the past, Ledger Nano and Ledger HW.1 however it's the* Ledger Nano S* that I will be reviewing today
When you own Cryptocurrencies, you need to protect your confidential data and the access to your funds. With Ledger Nano S, secrets like private keys are never exposed: sensitive operations are isolated in the Hardware wallet within a state-of-the-art Secure Element, locked by a PIN code. This ensures that Transactions can't be tampered with, since it requires physically verification through the embedded screen with a simple press of a button
Unlike the previous models the Ledger Nano S features a small built-in screen so that Users can directly gather important information, via the device reducing the risk of computer malware threat since it embeds a secure OLED display that allows an individual to double-check and confirm each transaction with a single tap on its side buttons
Ledger Wallet Nano S is a new hierarchical deterministic multi-signature hardware wallet for Bitcoin users that aims to eliminate a number of attack vectors through the use of a second security layer.
The Team has been busy working with Third-party Services to integrate the Ledger Nano S with popular existing Wallets like MyEtherWallet, BitGo or Mycelium essentially making this one the most compatible Cryptocurrency Hardware Wallet available on the Market.
Just like any other Hardware Cryptocurrency Wallet out there, it safely stores your Private Keys away in an offline storage within a protected area of a microcontroller, and cannot be transferred out of the device in plaintext, so you can rest assured that Hackers have little opportunity of directly accessing a Device that is not plug in or connected over the Internet
Hardware Wallets are basically Electronic Dongles with chipsets dedicated to specifically manage & store your Cryptocurrency Keys.
Everything is done under-the-bonnet and your Private keys never leaves the device. Using their own native Clients (or so called Chrome Extension or supported third-party apps, that specfically organize Digital tokens ensuring that Transactions are signed and broadcasted to the Blockchain only with validations on the physical dongle.
Buy Ledger Nano S
,Benefit | Outcome |
---|---|
Cheap | The Ledger Nano S model is currently one of the cheapest Hardware Wallet that allow you store multiple currencies. |
Protect | Stores Private Keys within a protected area of a microcontroller, and cannot be transferred out of the device in plaintext |
Compatible | Native Chrome Extention (Ledger Bitcoin/Ethereum Wallet) and third-party services (Copay, Electrum, Mycelium, MyEthereWallet, GreenBits & BitGo) |
Open Source | All Ledger Apps are fully Open Source, so anyone can access all source codes to authenticate code paths and contribute to the development. |
- Requires Google Chrome, must be used with a Ledger Chrome Extensions
- Deemed to be Less Secure (Compared to Trezor)
The fact that the Newest Hardware from Ledger includes additional security measures, such as the ability to visually confirm the correct receiving address on the device’s display finally catching up to their rival Trezer who's model is based on that key selling point, a built screen which the previous Ledger's Hardware Wallet could not compete with.
The level of security provided by the original Ledger Nano was viewed as inferior when compared with the Trezor, but the Nano S appears to have completely changed their stance on being the most secure Hardware Wallet. With the original Nano, the seed for the wallet was generated on the host computer rather than the actual device, this requires a working computer to gain access in order to initiate an action. With a built-in screen this has changed with the Nano S, since now the seed and PIN are generated directly on the hardware wallet, this means you need confirm any transaction in person with device itself
In terms of Pricing, Ledger Nano S clearly is one the cheapest Multi-signature Hardware Wallet while there has been major improvement to design and user interface, Ledger wanted their latest product to be Grandma friendly by that I mean that it should be user-friendly enough for people of ages, requiring little to zero technical assistance or experience to get started with Cryptocurrency
With the new The Nano S, the new design features a small encased aluminum cover with a built-in monitor and has only two physical buttons. Part of the Kit includes a reasonable long micro USB Cable, Instructions, Accessories and Recovery Sheet.
As for Instruction, Ledger Team has made this particular model even easier to set up with simple instruction that even Kids are meant to understand. Ease of use, and continuous development to the Ledger Nano S, has made this one the most cheapest and beginner-friendly Crypto Hardware Wallet
Keep in mind that Ledger was founded in 2015 in France, since then the company gained substantial traction in the Cryptocurrency sphere and has grown to be a worthy competitor to SatoshiLabs product Trezor. Level of Security offered now and the cheap price will likely mean the Ledger Nano S will become the people choice of Crypto Hardware Wallet, because of continuous development it seems that this particular Model is gaining an upper hand in design and usability
If you're interested to get yourself a Ledger, feel free to support my Affiliate Link and definitely leave a Comment if you did so!
Looking at their code, it should be fairly easy to add Steemit support. I thought about doing it myself but I didn't see much response from Steemians.
Upvoted all you've posted last 7 days to show some support. Seems like something that would be a good candidate for growth funding project. Just having your coin listed among the 8 supported by the Nano S would bring some attention to steem and reassure people willing to secure large Steem amount as an investment.
Thanks I saw.
Since I own a ledger and I looked a bit into the code, I proposed the idea. It might take me some time since I am not C/C++ fluent but it seems feasible.
I will make a post about how I would see it working, to get some feedback too, and then go bother the people of Legder on their Reddit.
Thank you for posting this review!
Upvoted and re-steemed!
Have a fantastic weekend,
Steem on,
Mike

I was thinking of getting a hardware wallet soon and ledger was on my list, being able to see the product tested before is very helpful.
Thank you for this review and re-steemed!
Thank you @walterjay, I would definitely recommend Ledger Nano S because it's reasonably price (generally speaking a lot of Hardware Wallet are expensive) and offer much better security from Ledger's previous models. Trezor may be more secure however that fact you're already using an offline storage device leaves little rooms for a Security Breach. Ledger has been doing well and I also recommend getting several different Branded Hardware Wallets, since I can envision people having 2-3 devices to Store a large amount of Cryptocurrency. If you wait longer, you'll likely get a Model that supports more Cryptocurrency which is something I look forward to next. Either ways, these so-called ''Cryptocurrency Hardware Wallets'' are going to get Cheaper and much more advance, so it makes sense to buy reasonable priced Tech Gadgets over time
is this a USB wallet? thats pretty rad, dont think Ive seen one before
Yup it's a USB or are so called basically Electronic Dongles! Wouldn't spend much money on It. Just like Hardrives, they will become cheaper over time!
yes of course like most things. wait a few years and they drop like half the price or more
The ledger's setup is definitely not user friendly. I still love my Ledger S Nano. I'm using the Trezor now, and honestly... it looks like the Trezor kills the Ledger in simplicity and usability!
The Nano S is almost beating the Trezor since v1.3 update. Them raising 7m$ not long ago gives me a lot of hope for the future.
