RE: Debating Gold vs. Bitcoin Investments

in #bitcoin5 years ago

It` s True the old guy (and gold salesman) doesn't understand the value of a new emerging (and disruptive to his business) technology. What a surprise. Meanwhile the next generation understand it in an instant, because they grew up with the internet and online gaming where, for example, MMORPG games like Runescape and World of Warcraft have had flourishing entire economies online that only exist digitally where items are traded every day for "real" money. For an old person, they think because you cannot touch it that it does not exist and cannot have value, yet the world's most valuable companies Facebook, Google, and Amazon all rely on the internet and things that do not exist physically for their business models. The older generations told us that these things were a fad, and that's because they don't get it. They don't understand where value comes from. They don't realize that only existing digitally is a benefit and not a drawback. They don't realize that intrinsic value is an oxymoron. They still think you need a shiny rock to "back" something for it to have value. They do not notice how the world economy has been running just as if not more efficiently without the backing of physical objects. Backing is merely a tool for bootstrapping the network effect onto a new money. Bitcoin already has a network of users and therefore requires no bootstrapping for people to start trusting it. It is already verifiable that it cannot be printed, you do not need a proxy like gold to prove that. Ironically enough gold is a rather bad object to back something by because it is being mined every day and it is not truly scarce. The supply of gold could easily double or even more overnight by the mining of a single asteroid. Gold is old, heavy, costly, not scarce in the universe, and generally useless. Cryptocurrency is the obvious choice for anyone who grew up with the internet. Our generation finds gold worthless and Bitcoin worthwhile. The writing is on the wall, the trend is clear; bitcoin > gold as a currency in the long run. Sorry Peter but your time is almost up. You had a good run, but it's time to make way for the new kids on the block.
