Remember MTGox. Those aren't bitcoins you had, those were GoxCoins... But no one called it GoxCoin untill withdraws we're broken. And GoxCoin isn't even a crypto. It's a digital iou.

If you have a balance on an exchange, it's not you BitCoin... Start calling it what it is. If it's on Coinbase, you have CoinbaseBitcoin, or CoinbaseEth. If it's on Gemini you have GeminiBTC or GeminiLTC, or GeminiUSD.

The only way to own some bitcoin is to keep it in a wallet that only you have have the keys to.

Do your best to use exchanges and inform others of exchanges that allow you to keep your money in your control. Bisq does this, and provides escrow during the exchange period. Vary safe going to or from Bitcoin to an altcoin.. safe to buy Bitcoin with Fiat. And be careful selling Bitcoin for Fiat.

In the beginning of Bitcoin the exchange part was in a chat room and done P2P. It was difficult and hard to trust people. People saw money to be made and created exchanges that hold your crypto, they seem trustworthy but they could dissapear with your crypto, or freeze your account. Distributed exchanges are starting to be easier, and more liquid. Use the right tool for the job.
