That's because you paid a super low fee. Most of the time a $3 fee will get your transaction confirmed within 24 hours. Yesterday I paid a $7.50 fee and it was confirmed in less than an hour.
How much was your transaction. Ofcourse if you send $10000 in BTC 7.50 is no big deal but if you are sending 20 then that is a whole other story.
