# Animals: Gecko

When I moved to Margarita’s Island, something that caught my attention was a strange noise that was heard in the houses of the island, at first I assumed that they were nocturnal birds but I was surprised to know that it was an animal they called "Guaripete". Despite not knowing what it was, I decided to ignore it until in a moment I saw two lizards fighting on a wall, something very common in the houses of Venezuela, and I told the owner "I see they have many Tuqueques" to which she asked me what I meant by that word (fortunately she wasn’t offended).

It turns out that in the east of the country these geckos are known as "Guaripetes", I knew them all my life as "Tuqueques" and I did not know they made that sound (or at least those from the west of Venezuela do not). After explaining to her, she kept laughing, saying it was a strange name. After that we spent the night talking a little about the fierce fighters on the wall and about various terms that I would have to add to my "Dictionary of the Island". In short these small reptiles have a wide geographical distribution, can be found in Central America, the Caribbean and north of South America.

Cuando me mudé a la Isla de Margarita algo que me llamó la atención fue un extraño ruido que se escuchaba en las casas de la isla, al principio supuse que se trataban de aves nocturnas pero me sorprendió saber que se trataba de un animal al que llamaban “Guaripete”.

A pesar de no saber de qué se trataba decidí ignorarlo hasta que en un momento vi dos lagartija luchando en una pared, algo muy común en las casas de Venezuela, y le dije a la dueña “Veo que tienen muchos Tuqueques” a lo cual ella me preguntó a que me refería con esa palabra (Afortunadamente no se ofendió).

Resulta que en el oriente del país esas lagartijas son conocidas como “Guaripetes”, yo toda mi vida los conocí como “Tuqueques” y no sabía que hacían ese sonido (O al menos los del occidente de Venezuela no lo hacen). Después de explicarle ella no paraba de reír diciendo que era un nombre bastante raro.

Después de eso pasamos la noche hablando un poco de los fieros luchadores en la pared y de varios términos que tendría que agregar a mi “Diccionario de la Isla”.

En fin estos pequeños reptiles tienen una amplia distribución geográfica, se pueden encontrar en América Central, el Caribe y al norte de América del Sur.
