Just Punch Them Out And WIN!

~ § ~

A Sport Like No Other

One of the many perks of spectating at a basketball game, is the chance to win big bucks playing Bingo at halftime. Think of it as a truly rousing sporting event WITHIN a sporting event. And the game is quite simple. All you have to do is fork out a dollar per card, to get a chance to win BIG. The play is intense, the excitement is palpable, and the potential for winning is great. The last pot was worth 850 dollars! Which is nothing to sneeze at.

And so far, to date, after playing many many rounds over the seasons, I've not been very good at it. I've not won a THING. I'm GREAT at playing, but I don't seem to be very good at WINNING. I've included some of my leftover cards here, and will share a few of my thoughts and theories on playing the game of Bingo.

My Strategies and Tactics

It's All In The Initial Pick

I try to select a GOOD card. The ladies that sell them, as you walk into the stadium, dress up in really wacky, wild outfits. And they give you a choice of which card you want from the pile they hold out in front of them. I NEVER pick the first card, on top. The one's in the middle seem to be better. I never pick the bottom card either. There must be a reason it's down there, at the very bottom.

Pay A-t-t-e-n-t-i-o-n During Play

The basketball play-by-play announcer calls out the letter/number combinations over the P.A. system, after they are picked by one of the oddly-dressed ladies. And do they ever go FAST. I listen well during play, and sometimes verify 'the call', if I have time, when they show it on the giant scoreboard. It's a little white bingo ball image, with a letter and number on it. But the scoreboard is WAY up in the air, and the card is down on my lap. Sometimes, there just isn't enough time to listen, look at the paper card, re-check the scoreboard image up above, re-focus on the card in your lap, then punch a selection, before the next number gets called. This is one stressful sport.

I DO wish they would go slower sometimes. (Yes, I've TRIED the obvious: holding the card up in the air, visually comparing it 'next to' to the big screen so far away in the gym, to 'mirror' the card to the screen during calling. But it doesn't seem to help. It's darn hard punching the numbers out on the card, while held up over your head. Plus, I get yelled at now and then. I have NO idea what "down in front, idiot " means in the world of Bingo, but the folks behind me seem to use it often when I do this during the game.)

Accuracy In Punching Is KEY

Having large hands can be a detriment during punch-out Bingo. If you DO win, they have to verify your numbers at the desk. The ones you've folded over after the call. (NEVER pull the number off altogether. FOLD them over. Or you won't get the money.) Getting really excited during play, then overly aggressive in this step of the game can be a disaster. Grace and finesse at punching are key here. I suggest using your smaller fingers, if you happen to be clumsy or ham-fisted about number 'tagging'. I take great pride in my number-pushing ability and grace in the heat of the game. And believe you me, I've practiced hard and long to get to this pinnacle of my life.

Talk Your Way Through It

Discussing letter/number combinations out loud to yourself during the match seems to help in focus as well. Using clever little phrases I call yesnomers about the call seems to 'keep me on point' and 'dialed in' during play. (Note: those sayings are not mine. I borrowed these little gems from the basketball coach, from listening to the transistor radio during his post-game interview, after the BB game is over).

The following below [↓] are a few examples of my own, personal yesnomers, used during our Bingo play. I've showed the letter/number combination the caller reads aloud to the left, followed by my wordplay witticisms that help keep me focused during an intense match to the right.

Example Call And Verbal Repartee

(Shown by B-I-N-G-O letter)

B

B1- "Bomber-This CARD Is A Bomb!"
B4- "Before WHAT?!" (That one really cracks me up)
B9- "Thank Goodness, Doctor"
B12- "A GREAT Vitamin"

[They never seem to call these, but if they do, I'm ready]:
B17-"Best Bomber Of WW II"
B25- "Second Best Bomber of WW II"

I

I18-"Not Anymore (I'm Not)" (Works for ANY number they call--I'm over 30)
I21-"NOW I Can Drink Beer"

N

N(Any#)- " 'N Why Don't You Call Better Numbers?!"

G

G(Any #)- "Gee, That Number Sucks"
-or-
G(Any #)- "Gee, 61...I Don't Need YOU"

O

O(Any#)- "Not Confident In Your Call?"
O69- "Wheeeeee" (Usually not said too loud)

In Summary

Even though I use this creative catalog of out-loud mutterance's during the game, it still doesn't seem to help much. I suppose it COULD be because there are only 5 letters of the alphabet used in the world of Bingo, and they only call out numbers 1 thru 75 during a game. This greatly limits the breadth of this verbal master-plan during play. If they would only branch out, and use more combinations, I might be able to come up with better sayings. And win more. I've suggested it, but don't think that's happening anytime soon.

The "Freebie"

My last big strategic move during play is to always wait till the last moment, to punch the 'Free', center spot. I wait to push this space out at the very LAST possible moment, once I've gotten a row completely filled in. I like to think of it as a 'gimme', at the very last second of play. Adds a huge excitement to an already riveting game, and shows I'm in full control of my situation.

The Free Squares

More Logic -- I've always felt that punching out the 'Free' hole first, BEFORE you start the game, might decrease your odds of winning in the end. Call it Bingo Karma, or some other sportive moojooh. It feels like you're getting cocky, or maybe a bit ahead of yourself during a contest. By NOT punching the center first, it might boost the odds of winning in my direction. Sort of a landslide of last second, positive energy in number selection/winning potential. Though to date, this part of the strategy hasn't helped me win the 850 dollars either. I suppose the logic could be flawed. But I highly doubt it. I've thought through this strategy long and hard over many, many years of play.

Long-Standing Point Of Contention On Bingo Strategy Concerning-"Freebie"

A few of my friends punch out the freebie FIRST, before the calling even starts. Seems incredibly bold to me. Though they claim this part: "gets their head in the game from the start ", "focuses them on the play at hand ", and "builds confidence as you see results on the card, BEFORE the game even starts ". And though my friends sound a bit like the coach on the radio, I've never heard him say ANY of these things after a sporting event. Ever! So, I stick with my tried and true system of Bingo. (Though, to be honest, one friend DID win 250 dollars once. So maybe I need to re-think this "Freebie" strategy, going forward. I'll spend some more time pondering this, though I hate to mess with a staid sporting system, once it's firmly in place.)

A Little Help

Does anyone out there in the world of Steemit play Bingo? For example, at other big sporting events, in the Grange Hall, Bingo Parlor, or even at home on your own? (I DO have a giant, glass-globed Air Bingo Machine. It blows the balls all around, before your shoot them into one of two Plexiglas 'arms' for the pick. I haven't used it yet, because it needs a new air-supply device. Plus it's BIG.) If you Bingo specialists out there have any great tips, tricks or theories to help with winning in this sport, I would LOVE to hear about them. Any strategies you've come up with over time, that you don't mind sharing my way, would be greatly appreciated.

Of The Discards And Such

I'm always wondering what to do with the piles of old cards I keep after each game...

Some Possible Uses For Old Cards

  • Future Bingo-Practice Cards
  • Improving Your Speed-Bingo, Number 'Punching' Abilities
  • Letter/# Call Recognition Increasement(Record/play calls - home stereo & practice play)
  • A Fine Base Material For Decoupage
  • One-Time Soup Strainer
  • Paper Airplane Engineering Practice (holey, poor aerodynamics to overcome)
  • Christmas Advent Calendar (Flip over & draw Holiday scene on back)
  • Wad Them Up After You Lose, Throw Them On The Basketball Floor In Disgust

Any Other Ideas Out There?

Sort:

I never even knew it was such a thang and here you have a whole perfect strategy developed! Very cool! Once you master this, you can move on to learning card counting and make a mint off of the casinos!!

Oh, it is a HUGE thang. OK, maybe not THAT big, but if I can win moneys, it's a-OK with me. Late getting around on here, as I haven't been on here much. We had some sort of storm of the century here, so have moved about 7800 tons of snow by 'hand' lately. A typical day for a Michigander, but we weenie NW'er's aren't used to it. (You should see people trying to drive around in the stuff...YIKES!) I think a post is in order here.
I'll keep working on my card counting, though I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, so not likely to get much beyond 'the boot' out the front door at the casino. Not that I've ever spent much time there anyway. Lost $8 in Reno once and quit. High rollers, step on over.
Thanks for coming over and playing in the Oingo Boingo world of Bingo. (I guess that is actually a band... I thought it was some sort of cool saying. I'm SO hip...and saying 'hip' means I'm even LESS 'hip'. Large Sigh, and not really caring much either. Keeping up appearances is just that, keeping up, so I seldom try. Well, hope your day is a good one my friend, and stay warm and happy. Cheers.

I heard about that storm from a friend on YouTube. They are up on Hwy 58 in Oakridge, Oregon. Said the highway still is not open!! Sounds a nasty mess!

I heard that area got hammered pretty good. The snow here is SO heavy, they call it Cascades cement. Pulls down everything it sits on. A real mess for sure. Hope your friend is digging out.

Yeah they got FEMA up there and they did an emergency lifeline, but other than that everything is shut down. Craziness!!

I've driven that highway quite a bit over the years. It's not much of a picnic on good days, and with icy conditions and a lot of it lined with forest, watch out. I can imagine it is a huge mess. I think they have power now. Which is good, but what a pain.

Oh! Really great topic and good idea to discuss about this thing! It would be fun to play this game.

Thanks for providing some tactics for us. Very interesting!

In the meantime, I think, we don’t have this kind of game in Thailand and it’s too complicate for me to understand about Bingo. Ha ha! ;D

But, one thing that I’m similar to you is that “I will never pick the first card, on top, and the bottom card either. The middle one seems to be better, I absolutely agree!” ;)

It is fun, even for 'just the fun' of it. And if you can win money, why not. Though as more people play, and the pot goes up, I've even LESS likely to take it home. Oh well, fun is fun is fun.
Maybe you can start Bingo in Thailand, and become famous. I can mail you my big Bingo game ball. Then again, it's glass, so maybe not. But you can start small. Soon, I can say I know the most famous person in Thailand, "Tangmo, The Bingo Queen". I can just see it now, on TV and on billboards, the Internet, and everywhere in between. And I can tell people, "I knew her when". Just don't forget us little people, when it happens. ( :
Hope your day is going well, and yet, I think it is night. I hope you are asleep. Cheers, GFF

Ha ha! Good idea! Great name, “Tangmo, The Bingo Queen”! OKAY! I promise, I’ll not forget you, little people! ;D

It would be fun if I will be on TV, on billboards, the internet and everywhere and everyone will know me…..

WOW! I’ll be a millionaire! But, for now, may I borrow you 3 Steem for the one card! Ha ha! ;D

Hope you have a joyful night and sweet dream, GFF!

🎵B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O and Bingo was his name! 🎶

Ah, the famous Bingo song. I haven't heard that in years. Thanks for that. I'm WAY late getting back on here, as we've been inundated with a 100 year snow storm, and I've spent the last week moving snow. Thanks for the song, and tuning in to this weeks big Bingo game. It's now over for the season. Large sigh.

We're getting more snow as well and I hear back at Toad Hall now they are getting it to, and I was hoping heading back there soon to be rid of the Midwest snow and get the New England Spring, oh well, snow is lifelong companion I suppose.

Howdee doo, so glad to hear from you. Sounds like you are up to it in the white stuff. Our big storm was a doozy for out here, but probably child's play for a true Noreastermeister. I'm pretty sure I moved a couple of tons of the stuff in the last week, with a lot of staying up all night long to do it. Think a post is in order about these wintry shenanigans.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. The Midwest has been getting hammered, though I've not talked to relatives out that way since the atmospheric river has been going through that area. What a mess, I guess. How much snow is there, where you be?
Hope your weekend is a good one, and you get back to Toad Hall soon. Cheers my friend, stay warm and dry and happy.

We just had a doozywhopper of a snow here. I love to walk about in it at night, and take photos ( I stayed up all night doing that one night...more on that lateron). I heard the Midwest is getting hammered, so might laugh at our big storm. Though at my house, ended up with 18 inches, which is MASSIVE here. And they don't call it Cascades Cement for nothing. Yikes, the stuff is heavy.
Stay warm, and dry, and keep smiling. Hope you get back to The Toad soon. And spring is just around the corner. I KNOW it, is has to be....

Oh wow! What you do with the snow? Pardon de ignorance, all I get is heat in this island 😅

I pushed it off my buildings and tarps, and left it in huge piles to freeze up and stay for another month or two. What fun. Though making snowballs for drinks is fun. Keep them in the freezer, and bring them out in summer for a sip or two. Or throw them at the neighbors, when they can't make their own snowballs to throw back. OK, maybe not. Stick to a small aperitif.
Right about last Wednesday I could have used a bit of your heat. Though I'm sure it can be oppressive now and then. And you wish for snow there, in that same now and then...

This is exactly what was in my head when I saw the post as well :) Also I love Chi's so amazing thumbnail.

It was inevitable to not think in bingo song hehe

That and sitting in a tree with the love of your life, smooching away. Ah, the classics of youthful remembrance.

It is fun, and if it brings back memories, even better. Did you play it for fun in school, or as part of math and statistics? Thanks for stopping in my post.
