The steem community cretainly has values and core ideas, but they're currently unstated. I'd like to fix that by drafting up a mission statementthat would then be linked to on the hamburger menu and exist in the two key software repositories:

  • Steemit.com
  • Steemit

In my mind it goes a bit like this:

steemit

Steem is a community forged from both digital and human components. The digital components exist to facilitate the interactions of the humans in the community and serve as a social and economic carrier between the people who use the blockchain. Steemit's blockchain component, STEEM, provides an international, verifiable mechanism for the people in the community to get to know one another, and most importantly, to aid one another in mutual endeavors. In this sense, Steemit can be seen as some sort of a newfangled mutual aid society, and this view certainly has some truth to it. Simultaneously, the blockchain component STEEM combined with steemit.com create a competition between users that causes a virtuous circle of competition-- it was designed to help its users achieve more.

Many of the people in the community hold somewhat quirky political views, but this is not a condition of membership in the community. All that is required to join us is an open mind. Steemit welcomes your point of view and your projects, but all should be warned that Steemit surely will not tolerate your bullshit, so please, leave that away from the community. Everyone has enough bullshit in their lives already.

The digital bits of steemit are under constant improverment. Implementations of this set of technologies include:

  • Digital Currency
  • Messaging
  • Data Storage
  • Secure Encryption
  • Novel Communications Platforms

Many things can be implemented on the STEEM blockchain, however we are currently emphasizing these areas:
(Community I need help with this)

...and de-emphasizing these:
(Community I need help with this)

If you write software and wish to participate, our key repositories are here:

github.com/steemit

In the physical world, our community is beginning to manifest itself, weather that's in the form of @thecryptodrive's billboards or a project to build future cities called @steemitcity, or a soon-to-be-held festival in the city of Amsterdam.

Community members join for many reasons, and none are invalid. We seek to fill our community with the best and brightest minds in all the world, and hope that you'll help us to recruit people you think fit that profile.

Some brief thoughts--

  1. Whitepaper is too broad in scope and isn't for this purpose. (Whitepaper is still great, mind you)
  2. I did ponder putting a statement in here about how steemit is, overall, opposed to war. But that might be injecting my personal opinion. I am, of course, vehemently opposed to war. I hope that you are, as well.
  3. This came about in a brainstorm because sometimes I am unsure of the INTENT of the community with respect to the direction of the blockchain's future.

Nicely done my friend. I would say that interms of both the emphasizing and deemphasizing topics those even for me on a micro level are extremely fluid so to expect the community as a whole to define this and have it be useful data for any extended period of time feels to me like it might be a bit much to ask, this is of course just my opinion.

This is a very important to flush out, distribute and ideally get mostly full community buyin. In all honestly, having a shared mission statement is what makes an 'Us' vs 'Them' view of other users or groups on here.

This is a good idea. I would just maybe consider changing this:

Many of the people in the community hold somewhat quirky political views, but this is not a condition of membership in the community

I'm not sure if quirky sounds right here it is one step away from saying "wacky".

Yeah, the whole line should probably go. I don't want to make it sound politically oriented, as it obviously is not given our odd mix of techno-

  • commies
  • anarchists
  • conservatives
  • and good old pinkos

Point being-- we are wacky :)

cool article but not everyone is political here. i don't see steemit as some fringe network. just saying.

Ah, well, I hate to break it to you, but.... more or less.... we're a bunch of wackos.

Note that I in no way meant that in a negative sense: Wackos are way way more fun than "normal" typos, and I wouldn't shape our userbase any other way.
