Life will find a Way: a Hummingbird Nest amidst the Barbed Wire
Took this photo during my recent trip to Cocora Valley in Colombia. The nest was found behind a semi-abandoned building among coils of barbed wire, skillfully built from moss. I find this things appalling (barbed wires and fences, not the nests), but unfortunately it's everywhere in South America.
It was in Acaime La Casa de los Colibríes - a place full of tiny hummingbirds flashing by, not paying much attention to the big slow humans. We were very careful not to disturb the nest, that's why I'm not even sure how many nestlings were there. One bald head is clearly visible though.

Nobody else said it, so I'll ask what's on everyone's mind. How fat of a cock would it take to get friction on the sides of that nest?
Not sure mate, somehow cocks were not on my mind when I observed this nest. That's probably, more like your kind of things.

In general, a Hummingbird that is about to be a mother, searches with great patience for the ideal place to make its nest in the form of a glass; usually on a branch of a tree. The mother uses spider webs like glue and very fine vegetable fibers, like those of natural or thicker cotton and even tiny pieces of wood and twigs, gluing them with spider webs to give them stiffness and strength to the nest. In addition, it collects bits of lichen from the bark of trees and sticks them out of the nest in an effort to provide it with camouflage to make it "invisible" to the eyes of predators (imagine that in this case it is built on pua wire. greater protection?)
By the way, the Hummingbird father, as you can imagine, shines not for its feathers but for its absence. It does not deal with anything that has to do with the nest, much less with the incubation or feeding of their children. Meanwhile, the busy mom takes care of finishing it well inside, the nest should be a cozy little place, with enough insulating material in order to maintain the ideal temperature of incubation and for the development of the chicks. It must be large enough to house up to a pair of chicks, but small enough so that the mother can cover it with her belly during the incubation period and the lifting one.
