The Little Edinburgh Project

This is Little Edinburgh, it is a series of shots I have taken around the city of Edinburgh in Scotland over the years. It is called Little Edinburgh because the focus of the project is to take photos in a way as to show the city in miniature using the tilt-shift effect. Edinburgh is an international cosmopolitan city but still somehow has a small town feel to it. I cannot walk down the street without recognising someone I know. So with that in mind it felt appropriate to create a vision of Edinburgh that makes it look very small, almost like a toy town.

Princes Street and the Royal Scots Greys Monument

Carrying on from part 20 of the little Edinburgh Project, here is another shot of princes street and the Royal Scots Greys monument (the statue) that is erected at the entrance to the princes street gardens. Prince street gardens is a park that separates the old and new town. The old town being the more historic part of the city identified by its neo-gothic medieval architecture. The new town is a more organised and centrally planned (and newer) part of the city identified by the georgian architecture as well as having long straight and wide roads organised in blocks (the old town is a mish mash of little windy roads).

As mentioned in the previous post about this area of town, the statue at the centre of the image is the Royal Scots Greys Monument. The Royal Scots Greys being a british army cavalry regiment that was operational from 1707 - 1971. At that time it was merged with the 3rd Carabiniers to create The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who exist to this day as a more modern fighting regiment.

You are so great and this photo a vety good. I like that.

Tilt shift is a very cool effect. Can that be done with a regular camera?

Thanks! And yes! This shot was taken with a regular camera and the tilt shift effect was added in post processing.

Very cool. Did you use Lightroom?

Thanks! Normally I use lightroom for all my photo edits, but for this project I used Photoshop. Its much easier and has more powerful tools to achieve the tilt shift effects I am after.

I found that filter option in Affinity Photo and it worked decently. I think this would look better if my angle was higher.

Yes! That is the key with tilt shift. You need to be at a raised position above your subject so that you are shooting at a down angle.
